Lanier MS - April 24, 2020

principal

Happy Friday!

Thank you for a great week with our highly anticipated kick-off of distance learning. We have been hearing such positive feedback about our students and teachers connecting with each other through Blackboard Collaborate Ultra. Thank you for your patience as we learn this new way to work with your students together. It seems all is going in a favorable manner with connecting with our children. If your child has tech issues, please have child contact their Teacher Advisory staff member to put in a tech ticket on their behalf.

Teachers have loved reconnecting and hearing voices and seeing students’ faces. Be sure to watch this video and share with your children, who are our intended audience. It lets you all know how we feel as Lanier staff members. We miss our students!

In light of COVID-19, we would like to share some positive news from the GMU Wrestling Team.  Working with GMU's Athletics Adopt-A-School program is a collaborative, mentor/volunteer, community service program with Fairfax County Public Schools and City of Fairfax Public Schools.  This partnership has been selected for the Jack Wood Award in GMU's Town Gown Relations!

The Jack Wood Award in Town Gown Relations is a university and community-wide annual award program to recognize both Mason and community individuals and groups, as well as government, businesses, and not-for profits who demonstrate leadership in fostering mutually beneficial relationships between the university and the community during the past year.  The Partnership category recognizes an initiative created between a Mason entity and an external organization(s) to benefit both entities.

In closing, the secondary administrators would like to share several updates with you today.  Please review the information provided below:

Report Cards/Progress Reports: Report Cards/Progress Reports will be mailed centrally for both third and fourth quarters.

Parents/Guardians may opt into “Go Paperless” for report cards by following the below instructions:

  • Parents/Guardians can take advantage of the paperless option, by logging into ParentVUE, then going to “My Account” and selecting "Go Paperless!". This is the only way to keep a paper report card from being generated for students at the secondary level. All parents who share the same address as the student must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option. This option must be selected prior to May 12th to prevent the 3rd quarter report card from being mailed.

With the governor’s order that Virginia schools remain closed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, FCPS has resources available to meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of students.

Beginning Monday, March 30, 2020, any FCPS parent may schedule a 30-minute phone consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker, for either themselves or their middle or high school student. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their student’s emotional well-being during their time away from school.  Student consultations will provide support and strategies to students who may be experiencing difficulties with anxiety, mood, behavior, or peer or family interactions during this unprecedented and challenging time.  Information about community resources will also be made available.  To schedule a phone consultation, parents should click the following link: https://forms.gle/WKchwGnv4LkezQwG8.

This service is not intended for mental health emergencies.  If an emergency is suspected or indicated, please call 911.  Additionally, students and families can access mental health support if there is a crisis of emergency during the time of the closure.
