Oak Hill students celebrated Virtual Spirit Week by reading and wearing pajamas.

Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

How has your week been going? Except for Blackboard Learn (24-7), what successes are you feeling good about? What small wins are you celebrating with your family? The DeVore’s coded a robot, discussed fractions when tripling our waffle recipe, and are continuing to write handwritten letters to family members. My husband is learning a new skill. He is teaching my son about area, perimeter and sifting rocky soil in preparation for our new brick sidewalk! We got in some tractor rides, trampoline jumps and Zoom calls to Mema and Papa. A daily chore list has been established and my son is successfully unloading the dishwasher, taking care of all pet responsibilities and vacuuming the upstairs without being “nagged”. These are wins. Now, we could talk about the academic lessons that were challenging and the nagging or redirection that happened during these times of the day. Those I choose to forget! This is a new skill for me!

We have been working very hard behind the scenes so that we can continue synchronous (live) instruction on Monday. We know this is frustrating and confusing and I truly hope this is the last time we need to change the log-in procedure. This new procedure allows students to log on directly to Blackboard Collaborate Ultra (BBCU) without needing to go through Blackboard Learn (24-7). You child’s teacher will be sending detailed directions to you Thursday or Friday. We are here to help. We want this new platform to be successful. Let us know what you need once you have received the directions (video and written steps).

Our teachers have expressed over and over that they are SO READY to get this done right! They enjoy their synchronous time with your child. They are ready, we are ready and we hope you are ready Monday!

Sincerely,

Holly DeVore, Principal

Student Registration

reg

Schools remain closed to families; however, if you have a rising kindergartener or other new student to register, we would like to do a preliminary registration now.  If you know of any families that would be new to Oak Hill (that have rising kindergarteners or students in grades 1-6), please forward this information to them.  Early registration for next year is important as it supports the number of teachers for which we are staffed.

To register your child for school, please email jahorne@fcps.edu with “Registration” in the subject line.  If you are able to fill out the registration packet online, save it to your device, and attach it to the email to send back to us, that is the preferred option.  If you are not able to do that, please let us know when you might be available for a phone interview.  After we receive your email, we will reach out with any additional questions. If you have any questions or concerns about registration, please email Mrs. Horne.

Advanced Academic News

The Advanced Academic office emailed Level IV eligibility letters on April 13 to families with students who went through screening. If your child went through the screening process and you did not receive notification, please email Jane Wheeler, AART, at jgwheeler@fcps.edu.

Mrs. Wheeler will offer a virtual Question and Answer session tomorrow from 5:00 – 6:00 pm to help with questions about the Appeal process. If you receive notification that your student was found eligible, information regarding potential virtual orientation info sessions will be coming as soon as it is available.

To join the virtual Q/A session, please use this link. If you have questions, please contact Jane Wheeler, AART, at jgwheeler@fcps.edu.

A Note from the Oak Hill Specialists

Just as a reminder, the specialists have created a Blackboard site to provide ways to connect and communicate with specialists.  You will find information from each specialist including AART/STEAM, Art, Counseling, FLES (Chinese), Library, Music, and PE.  All our specialists are so excited to see your children and to engage with their students!

Every week, you will find a new choice board with an array of activities from our specialist teachers. Students will need to be logged into their google accounts to access the choice board. This is another avenue for your child to connect with teachers at Oak Hill and to supplement their daily learning.  Specialists will continue to hold daily office hours that will be used for various activities and will also be responding to parent or student email throughout the day.

Please reach out to the specialists if you have any questions or if you are not sure how to visit during office hours! We hope that everyone is staying safe and healthy and we are looking forward to connecting with your children!
