Message from Principal Magliola

1

Dear Jackson Students and Families,

This week was very challenging and I hope this message finds you well as we proceed with Distance Learning at LJMS. We are hopeful our efforts to increase security and ease of access for students will have a positive impact. If you recall my previous message earlier in the week, these measures also identify all participants by name, rather than a chosen username. This will be a key feature moving forward with security and safety for all students and staff in a virtual environment.

Here is what we have completed as a staff over the last few days:

  • set up secure classrooms using Blackboard Collaborate Ultra within FCPS/24-7 in order to launch synchronous sessions beginning next week on 4/21
  • teachers set up their classes in FCPS 24/7 Learning (Blackboard)
  • Teacher Synchronous Office Hours are NOT REQUIRED for students to attend and are intended to only be used for clarification on information or assignments given by a teacher.
  • Teachers will communicate with students around missing work for the 3rd Quarter and help them understand how to compete/turn-in this work.

Teachers have been messaging with their students. Please help us by making sure your child/children see this.

Students,

Fairfax County Public Schools has changed the way we will all get into our Blackboard Collaborate sessions.

If you learn from videos, here’s one that will help you: VIDEO

We are ready to engage in virtual teaching and learning with students.  LJMS teachers have been hard at work to finish up the 3rd quarter and start new lessons for the 4th quarter. I am ready and excited to see students return on Wednesday to their synchronous classes.

I will update you on Monday should an alternative plan be needed.

Sincerely,

Mike

Grading @ LJMS during Distance Learning:

  • 3rd quarter is still open, but no new work for 3rd quarter can be assigned by teachers after March 13th.  However, students will have until April 24th to complete missing work that will help them to improve their 3rd quarter grade. More information will be provided.
  • Learning activities will be assigned to students for 4th quarter, and teachers will provide students with feedback on this work.  All students will receive a "No Mark" for 4th quarter, due to the unique nature of these circumstances.

Community Resources

VA Department of Education: COVID-19 RESOURCES

FCPS 2020 Mental Wellness Consultation Service

With the governor’s order that Virginia schools remain closed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, FCPS has resources available to meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of students.

Beginning Monday, March 30, 2020, any FCPS parent may schedule a 30-minute phone consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker, for either themselves or their middle or high school student. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their student’s emotional well-being during their time away from school.  Student consultations will provide support and strategies to students who may be experiencing difficulties with anxiety, mood, behavior, or peer or family interactions during this unprecedented and challenging time.  Information about community resources will also be made available.  To schedule a phone consultation, parents should click the following link: https://forms.gle/WKchwGnv4LkezQwG8.

This service is not intended for mental health emergencies.  If an emergency is suspected or indicated, please call 911.  Additionally, students and families can access mental health support if there is a crisis of emergency during the time of the closure.
