Today our middle school students can begin distance learning. Tuesday’s are “asynchronous” learning days, meaning the students complete assignments that teachers post for the day. During distance learning, students and parents can log into FCPS Blackboard 24-7 Learning regularly to review the weekly learning plan and activities that are going to be posted in Google Classroom and Blackboard Collaborate. However, since the FCPS Blackboard site is experiencing technical challenges since yesterday, students and teachers cannot log in at this time. However, students can still go to their Google Classroom sites and Blackboard Collaborate sites to access learning activities for the week posted by the teachers.
This morning, all students received a schedule with links for Blackboard Collaborate for. The email was sent to each student’s FCPSschools.net Gmail account and looked like this sample:
Herndon Middle School Weekly Distance Learning Schedule is on our website and linked here.
All FCPS middle schools will follow a set schedule for instruction. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays will be times for students to work on assignments on their own (asynchronous instruction). Each teacher will also provide students with “office hours” where students can ask questions and seek help. Wednesdays and Fridays will be used for direct virtual instruction with
English, math, science, social studies and world language teachers and some elective teachers (synchronous instruction). On Wednesdays, students will virtually attend the synchronous learning sessions for periods 1, 3, 5, & 7. On Fridays, students will attend periods 2, 4, & 6. Teachers who are providing synchronous learning will send students a link to Blackboard Collaborate Ultra to log in to class.

Herndon Middle School students should log in to FCPS Blackboard 24-7 Learning and check the announcements from each of their teachers. Teachers post the learning plan for the week. (If the site is down, students can still check the Google Classroom site and the Blackboard Collaborate site.) Middle School students will attend English, Math, Science, Social Studies and World Language and some elective classes virtually starting on Wednesday, April 15th. Synchronous instruction will happen through Blackboard Collaborate Ultra. Each teacher has a link to their own virtual classroom that they will provide to students. Students also received the links in an email today. (see sample above) |
- Third quarter is still open for students to complete work that was assigned or scheduled before March 13. Students will have until April 24 to complete missing or outstanding work that will help them improve their third quarter grades.
- No student work assigned after March 13 will be graded, at the recommendation of the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).
- Learning activities will be assigned to students for 4th quarter, and teachers will provide students with feedback on this work. All high school and middle school students will receive a "No Mark" for 4th quarter, due to the unique nature of these circumstances.
- Learning will include a mix of posted assignments and live learning experiences where teachers provide real-time virtual (synchronous) instruction.
- Students are expected to check their fcpsschools.net email accounts and their teachers FCPS Blackboard 24-7 Learning sites as well as Google Classroom sites each school day for assignments and important information.
- Middle School students will need to be ready for virtual real-time (synchronous) instruction on Wednesday and Friday (see schedule above). Teachers will record attendance in SIS for the English, math, science, social studies and World Language classes for Wednesday and Friday. Please email your child’s teachers if they are not able to attend a synchronous session so that options can be discussed.
- All teachers will be holding office hours where students can check-in for questions. Each teacher will post their office hours on FCPS Blackboard 24-7 Learning as well as their Google Classrooms.
- Email is the best way for students and parents to make initial contact with teachers, school counselors, administrators, or other staff members if you have a question.
- Teachers will not record letter grades for fourth quarter. Details on the calculation for the final grades will be communicated this week.
We hope that the technical difficulties are worked out for the 24/7 Blackboard site soon and we want to ensure our students and families know they can still access learning through the other sites where teachers are posting and holding sessions.
Please continue to let us know your questions.
