Oak Hill students were ready for the first day of Distance Learning.

Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

An Oak Hill parent reminded me today that, “We don't just teach the children resilience and perseverance, we live it in front of them every day.” I needed that reminder. I know many staff and parents hit that wall today and felt frustrated with technology, emails, reminders and changes in schedules. Many of us longed for a period of time when we were not ruled by a schedule, now we are yearning for one! Staff and parents are making difficult decisions every day. I can’t imagine what national leaders have on their minds.

I can say that our students were so excited to see their teachers yesterday and I know that will happen on a more consistent basis again. We are ready to give tomorrow a do over from today! Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you are unsure how to log in with the new Blackboard link. Our staff worked very hard today to learn new features and set permissions to ensure a safer, virtual environment.

At the end of an exhausting day I hope you will find joy in seeing our Oak Hill Staff Family showing you how they have made lemonade from the lemons we have been handed. Click here to see your Oak Hill Staff!  We couldn’t have asked for a better way to end this crazy day. 😊

Sincerely,

Holly DeVore, Principal

Distance Learning Technical Support for Students

As we launch Distance Learning, we wanted to share some important information with you concerning technology support for students and parents.  There are self-help guides that have been posted in FCPS 24-7 Blackboard to help with quick troubleshooting. To access them please follow these steps:

          1. Navigate to the “My FCPS” tab at the top
          2. Under the Continuity of Learning panel in the upper left, select
              “Elementary Resources.”
          3. On the next screen, you will see links in the left-hand side bar.  Scroll
all the way down to “Support Resources” and select that link.
          4. The Support Resources screen provides several help guides for
              FCPS online resources.

If this is unsuccessful in resolving the issue, students should then work with their teacher when they experience technical difficulties.  The teacher will attempt to help and determine if it is a tech support issue and next steps.

FCPS 2020 Mental Wellness Consultation Service

With the governor’s order that Virginia schools remain closed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, FCPS is planning academic instruction and has mental health professionals available to respond to the social and emotional needs of students.  Beginning Monday, March 30, 2020, any FCPS parent may schedule a 30-minute phone consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker, for either themselves or their middle or high school student. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their student’s emotional well-being during their time away from school.  Student consultations will provide support and strategies to students who may be experiencing difficulties with anxiety, mood, behavior, or peer or family interactions during this unprecedented and challenging time.  Information about community resources will also be made available.  To schedule a phone consultation, parents should click this link.  This service is not intended for mental health emergencies and if an emergency is suspected or indicated, please call 911.

Student Registration

reg

Schools remain closed to families; however, if you have a rising kindergartener or other new student to register, we would like to do a preliminary registration now.  If you know of any families that would be new to Oak Hill (that have rising kindergarteners or student in grades 1-6), please forward this information to them.  Early registration for next year is important as it supports the number of teachers for which we are staffed.

To register your child for school, please email jahorne@fcps.edu with “Registration” in the subject line.  If you are able to fill out the registration packet online, save it to your device, and attach it to the email to send back to us, that is the preferred option.  If you are not able to do that, please let us know when you might be available for a phone interview.  After we receive your email, we will reach out with any additional questions. If you have any questions or concerns about registration, please email Mrs. Horne.

When the office re-opens, we will ask you to come to the school to present the necessary documentation for registration (child’s original birth certificate, physical and immunizations, enrolling parent’s ID, lease/deed to your home). This will finalize your child’s registration.
