Science Activity - Will it Float?

Put a large mixing bowl on your kitchen counter. With your parents’ approval, gather ten small items from around your house that could fit inside the mixing bowl. Make sure the items are made of different materials. Some items you might choose are a cork, a plastic toy, an eraser, a paper clip, a clothes pin.

Spread the items out on a table or a counter. Predict which of the items will float in water and which ones will sink. Fill the bowl with water.

Place the first item in the bowl. Did it sink? Did it float? Repeat this test with every item. What do the things that float have in common? What do the things that sink have in common? In science, a word you can use to describe something that floats is buoyant.
