LJMS Update March 22nd

Good Evening Jackson Families,

I hope you have all been able to find comfort in being together with loved ones during this significantly challenging time. I am so proud and grateful to be part of our Luther Jackson MS community and have seen numerous efforts by many to care for and support those in need throughout these last weeks. While these are certainly difficult times we are experiencing, its moments such as these that bring us together in strength. We will learn from this, we will grow, and we will return even stronger than before.

Learning opportunities have changed momentarily, but are still all around us in our temporary environment. While we know GREAT things happen at LJMS everyday, we also know outstanding learning is currently happening in our homes in new and exciting ways. I look forward to continuing our learning and further providing meaningful and rich resources in these coming weeks during out Continuation of Learning model. Please make sure to access the provided link in this newsletter for MS resources for your student.

FCPS is currently planning the next steps, should we not be able to return to school by March 31st. I assure you that I will continue to keep you posted once those plans are finalized. I encourage you to keep informed through my daily announcements weekly newsletter, Twitter and Dr. Brabrand's communication.

**Please know our teachers care and want to support their students, but at this time we are following the FCPS directive of refraining from planning or delivering instruction until further plans are shared. Discussions around grades are valid and extremely important. However, as we have yet had guidance from FCPS regarding grades, we ask for continued patience as more details are provided.**

As always, please let me know if you have any questions and know that we will get through this.

Distribution of laptops to students - More details to follow this week

FCPS continues to plan to distribute laptops to students who need a technology device. Thank you for your patience. The FCPS Information Technology Department is developing the plan. The distribution process will follow the Health Department guidelines for safe distribution of technology devices.

To be ready for the distribution at Luther Jackson MS, we want to help families and are collecting information on digital access for our students at home. If your child does not have a technology device such as a computer, tablet, or laptop at home to use for distance learning, please complete this survey. Here is a link to our LJMS Tech Survey This will help us to be prepared.

Continuity of Learning Resources

FCPS has developed a plan for continuity of learning while school is closed.  The first two weeks of school closure (Monday, March 16 to Friday, March 27) will not include any teacher-directed instruction. Students can participate in optional, self-directed learning activities posted on the FCPS Elementary School Continuity of Learning Resources websiteFCPS 24-7 Blackboard website and the LJMS Website. Student work will be neither required nor graded. These activities will be across the content areas so children can choose activities that interest them.

Finally, our FCPS cable television channels are broadcasting learning activities. New instructional videos are being recorded and added regularly.

From Dr. Brabrand: "We have made plans to provide continuity of learning during this break. Our goal is for students to continue to engage in learning activities.  The first two weeks of school closure (from Monday, March 16 to Friday, March 27) will not include any teacher-directed instruction.  Students can participate in optional, self-directed learning activities that have been posted on FCPS 24-7 Learning (Blackboard) and are available at www.fcps.edu.   Again, these activities are not required, nor graded.

We are all in this together.   We encourage you to practice social distancing and healthy habits.   Wash your hands frequently, cough into your sleeve, and if you feel sick – stay home.  Thank you for your continuing support and cooperation."

How to Talk to Your Child About COVID-19

It is important that you have conversations with your children about why they are out of school, and that everyone is doing their best to make sure that they are safe and healthy. As you begin to plan these conversations consider reading Talking to Children about COVID-19

ParentVue Accounts

This weekend, you should receive an email from FCPS if you do not already have a ParentVue account. We implore you to please sign-up for an account. A ParentVue account makes it possible for parents to access the FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard) portal. If you already have an account, you can log-in here. This is where several of the resources for students will be located in the coming weeks. If you need help setting up your account, please call. We will happily walk you through the process.

Cable Channels – Continuity of Learning

FCPS is currently creating instructional learning programs that will air on your local cable channel. Finally, a time when we suggest you let your kids watch TV!

Additional instructional videos are being developed/recorded and will be added into the lineup as they are available.  Please check this week for programs that will benefit your children at home.
