Glasgow Community Gazette - March 17

Glasgow Community:

As explained in Dr. Brabrand’s most recent communication, FCPS has made plans to provide continuity of learning during this school closure. Our goal is for students to continue to engage in learning activities. The first two weeks of school closure (from Monday, March 16 to Friday, March 27) will not include any teacher-directed instruction. Students can participate in optional, self-directed learning activities that have been posted on FCPS 24-7 Learning (Blackboard) and are available at www.fcps.edu. Again, these activities are not required, nor graded, but highly encouraged.

While this may feel like a daunting task, here are some possible ideas and resources that may help with developing a routine. You might consider working with your child to develop a daily schedule that supports a balance of academic time as well as a mix of activities, including going outdoors, connecting with family and friends virtually, exercising, being creative, and relaxing. This article may help support your planning.

You might also help your child decide which two or three learning activities they might want to work on each day. Activities that do not rely on technology:

  • Read and record thoughts about reading on paper
  • Develop flash cards to support review of math, science, and history concepts
  • Choose one big topic from one subject and create a mind map that connects ideas.
  • Teach a family member something you learned this year and create a worksheet for them to complete

For families with technology access, you might take time with your child to orient and navigate FCPS 24-7(Blackboard). Below is a synthesis of what you can find in each core subject area folder; electives are also included on the Blackboard site. Each of these activities will help to keep your student engaged and ready to learn.

  • Language Arts - English: Encourage your child to read at least 30 minutes every day. Have them record their thoughts while reading in a notebook, specific activities are further outlined
  • Math: Find your child’s math course and select from a variety of activities
  • Science: Use resources to explore, review, and learn
  • Social Studies: Choose from a variety of learning modules
  • Health and Physical Education: Use strategies to support daily physical activity

Another resource to keep in mind is MackinVIA, which is the e-book and audiobook platform that provides middle school and high school students access to hundreds of popular fiction and nonfiction e-books curated by FCPS Library Information Services. The purpose of this collection is to inspire students to read for fun. Users can download the free MackinVIA app from the ios and android app stores to read or listen on their mobile devices, or they can log in to fairfax.mackinvia.com using their FCPS network username and password.  Be sure to log in to the FCPS blue bar, NOT the Follett prompt. Watch a 4 minute tutorial: MackinVIA Screencast Tutorial 2020.mp4. Here are some questions for a family and friend book club: Book club discussion questions.

We will continue to update you with new information as it comes. We wish you the best, and most importantly, take care of yourselves and loved ones.

As always, if you have any additional questions, please let me know.
