A Message From Franklin MS - March 15

Dear Franklin Families,

I appreciate your patience as we adapt to the ever-changing situation related to Covid-19.  We are grateful for your support and understanding during this challenging time.  The priority of FCPS remains the safety and well-being of our students, staff, families, and our community. We will work to stay in touch with our families and maintain communication.  Franklin MS is closed to all staff and students until further notice.

You can find the most up to date information on the FCPS website: www.fcps.edu and on Twitter @fcpsnews. You can read Dr. Brabrand's message from earlier today in its entirety, including information on the expanded availability of grab and go meals, at www.fcps.edu.

I encourage our community to practice social distancing. Interacting face-to-face with friends and neighbors through apps like FaceTime and video chats can help to practice social distancing while not falling into social isolation.  Social media may allow engagement with others as well, but we want to caution our families not to become over-reliant on apps that promote likes over personal contact. We encourage you to make phone calls, talk to friends, and keep in contact over this time. The world has pressed pause on our school year -- take this time to slow down, stay home, and support one another.

Information on what we will do with 3rd quarter is still in process.  Please be patient and know that the entire county and state are dealing with this and decisions around grading, testing, and SOL assessments have many implications, therefore this will take additional time to determine next steps.

I recognize this is a difficult time and you and your children may be experiencing a variety of feelings that can impact mental health.  Should you or a loved one be in need of mental health support, please do not hesitate to reach out to:

- Text NEEDHELP to 85511 for the Crisis Link Hotline at or call them at 703-527-4077

- Chat online with a specialist at CrisisChat.org or ImAlive.org

- Call an emergency mental health center at 703 573-5679 (Merrifield Center), 703-536-2000 (Dominion Hospital), or 703-289-7560 (INOVA emergency services)

Please continue to direct students to the optional learning activities available on the FCPS cable channels and by subject area on FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard). Note: these learning activities are not required or graded. Teachers will not be providing required work or assignments at this time.

I will continue to keep you informed as more information becomes available. Thank you for your continued patience and support. Again, if you have questions, please feel free to send me an email at dpwright@fcps.edu

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Principal

Learning Activities:

  • FCPS will promote digital and online resources to FCPS students that will provide continuity of learning during this break. Our goal is for students to continue to engage in learning activities.  The first two weeks of school closure (from Monday, March 16 to Friday, March 27) will not include any teacher-directed instruction. This work will not be required nor graded.
  • Additionally, FCPS cable channels with learning activities are now available. New instructional videos are currently being developed and recorded and will be added to the programming shortly. Channel 21 includes elementary school programming, Channel 25 includes middle school programming, and Channel 99 includes high school programming. This content will also be available online at www.fcps.edu.
  • Students can access the FCPS online library catalog for FMS to find electronic books, audio books, and lots of other resources from any computer from the following link: https://search.follettsoftware.com/metasearch/ui/100358
