A Message from Dr. Floyd

Hello Woodson Families!

By now you may have seen Dr. Brabrand's email updating the operating status of FCPS.  All school buildings and central offices are CLOSED.  This means we cannot open the school for any reason over the next two weeks.  Therefore, we will not have the library open on Monday nor will we be able to offer technology assistance during this time should you have an issue with your device.  Big thank you to Ms. Anderson for her willingness to open the library and for the continued tech support from Mr. Dillon, Mrs. Ellis and Mrs. Brown!

In the meantime, I encourage you to use this time as an important opportunity to rest, rejuvenate and connect with loved ones. When we do return to learning, either virtually or in classrooms, our students will need us to be prepared to do our very best work in supporting their transition. Caring for ourselves during uncertain times is one of the most important ways we can prepare to support our students.

All of the Woodson Pyramid Principals, encourage our community to practice social distancing. Interacting face-to-face with friends and neighbors through apps like FaceTime and video chats can help to practice social distancing while not falling into social isolation.  Social media may allow engagement with others as well, but we want to caution our families not to become over-reliant on apps that promote likes over personal contact. We encourage you to make phone calls, talk to friends, and keep in contact over this time. The world has pressed pause on our school year -- take this time to slow down, stay home, and support one another.

Information on what we will do with 3rd quarter is still in process.  Please be patient and know that the entire county and state are dealing with this and decisions around grading and testing have many implications, therefore this will take additional time to determine next steps.

I recognize this is a difficult time and you and your kids may be experiencing a variety of feelings that can impact mental health.  Should you or a loved one be in need of mental health support, please do not hesitate to reach out to:

- Text NEEDHELP to 85511 for the Crisis Link Hotline at or call them at 703-527-4077

- Chat online with a specialist at CrisisChat.org or ImAlive.org

- Call an emergency mental health center at 703 573-5679 (Merrifield Center), 703-536-2000 (Dominion Hospital), or 703-289-7560 (INOVA emergency services)

Please continue to direct students to the optional learning activities available on the FCPS cable channels and by subject area on FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard). Note: these learning activities are not required or graded. Teachers will not be providing work at this time. Please do not email teachers requesting work.

I will continue to keep you informed as more information becomes available. Thank you for your continued patience and support. Again, if you have questions please feel free to send me an email at cefloyd@fcps.edu.  You can read Dr. Brabrand's message in its entirety, including information on the expanded availability of grab and go meals, at www.fcps.edu.

Sincerely,
Dr. Floyd
