LJMS Update for Monday, March 16th
Jackson Families,
Yesterday, we received notice from Dr. Brabrand that schools will be closed until April 10th. Dr. Brabrand’s message followed the directive by Governor Northam to close all Virginia Public Schools for at least two weeks. We will continue to share information about next steps, as it becomes available.
The narrative of our current situation is moving quickly. I urge you to please stay informed by reading my News-You-Choose e-mails, reading the e-mails from Dr. Brabrand, and following us on Twitter at @LJMS_FCPS This will be the best way to get information out to you as quickly as possible. It is important that you have conversations with your children about why they are out of school, and that everyone is doing their best to make sure that they are safe and healthy. As you begin to plan these conversations consider reading Talking to Children about COVID-19.

We will be open from 12 PM-5 PM on Monday, March 16th. During this time students who do not have access to a device at home can come to LJMS to check out a laptop. In order to check out a device you must attend with your student to sign our parent consent form that allows us to assign them a device. We will also work with your student while on-site to make sure that they can log into the device before you leave.More details below.
A few things to understand about the process on Monday:
- Please enter the building from Door 1 (Our Main Entrance)
- There are a limited number of laptops available to our students and they are intended only for those students who have no other means to access learning resources from home. Please do not take a laptop if your student already has access to a computer at home.
- The laptop is a temporary loan and will need to be returned to the school as soon as school resumes.
- If you do not have internet access at home, while you are picking up a laptop, we will support you in getting free temporary internet access.:
El lunes estaremos distribuyendo un número limitado de computadoras portátiles a los alumnos de FCPS de 3.er a 8.o grado que no tengan acceso a computadoras en la casa. Nuestra escuela estará distribuyendo las computadoras entre [insert your timeslot]. Ustedes pueden venir en cualquier momento durante ese tiempo. Tomen en cuenta que ustedes tienen que presentarse con su hijo para firmar el formulario de consentimiento de padres a fin de que podamos asignarle una computadora a su hijo. This weekend, you should receive an email from FCPS if you do not already have a ParentVue account. We implore you to please sign-up for an account. A ParentVue account makes it possible for parents to access the FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard) portal. If you already have an account, you can log-in here. This is where several of the resources for students will be located in the coming weeks. If you need help setting up your account, please call. We will happily walk you through the process.

FCPS is currently creating instructional learning programs that will air on your local cable channel. Finally, a time when we suggest you let your kids watch TV!
Additional instructional videos are being developed/recorded and will be added into the lineup as they are available. Please check this week for programs that will benefit your children at home.

If you need additional books, we will also be opening the library on Monday, March 16th from 12 PM - 3 PM for book checkout. Your LJMS student(s) may select up to 2 additional books. Depending on the length of the learning pause, we will consider doing additional checkout days.

Many members of our community depend on meals provided at school to help feed their families. Some of you have reached out and asked how you can help?
LJMS will be accepting donations of non-perishable food items and grocery gift cards on Monday, March 16th from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm in the main office.
Examples of items - cereal, macaroni & cheese, soups, granola bars, fruit snacks, pudding, jello, horizon milk (unrefrigerated please), peanut butter, jelly, bread, pasta, pasta sauce, and canned tuna.
In addition to food items, we would also appreciate donations of any plastic grocery bags for packing and distributing items.
The school administration will assemble food bags that will be distributed to families on Monday afternoon.
We are grateful for your support and understanding during this difficult time. Our first priority remains the safety and well-being of our students, staff, families, and community.
We will provide updates as new information becomes available.
Fairfax County Public Schools will be providing emergency grab and go lunches at no cost for students at five sites today and Monday, March 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m..
School-age students are welcome to come to any of the five sites to pick up a lunch during that time period.
Grab and go lunches will be served at the following sites today at 11:30 a.m.:

Hutchison Elementary School, 13209 Parcher Avenue, Herndon
Hybla Valley Elementary School, 3415 Lockheed Boulevard, Alexandria
London Towne Elementary School, 6100 Stone Road, Centreville
Burke Center, 9645 Burke Lake Road, Burke
All meals are available at no cost to children 18 years and under.
Adult lunches are available for purchase for $2.
