Greetings WP Community--

As you may have seen Dr. Brabrand’s message, decisions are rapidly evolving as new developments arise.  Schools will be closed for students through April 10th.  The most important thing to keep in mind is the health and well-being of our staff and students. This is driving every decision.  Please take care of yourself and your family.

On this coming Monday March 16th, the building will be open starting at 8 am to 3 pm to allow for you to pick up anything that you will need for the coming weeks.  It will not be a time to hang around the school.  You will need to come in, get what you need and leave.  All administrators will be available starting at 10 am, if you need to get a confiscated cell phones.

You will be receiving more information from FCPS regarding learning opportunities moving forward. Continue to refer to the FCPS website for updates and emails.

Please stay healthy and safe.

Ms. Millard

West Po, Do You Know?

Did you know that West Potomac HS has an academic booster?  The Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) serves as the academic booster organization for our students and teachers. Here are a few examples of the PTSA at work:

  • The PTSA organizes the student academic recognition celebrations each quarter – All A Honor Roll – Krispy Kreme, All A& B Honor Roll – Moe's Chips, Queso/Guacomole, as well as gift card raffles, and Rising Stars – special breakfast, and in the fall with academic awards.
  • The PTSA provides funding for one of the two late buses offered to all students each week (M/Th) so that they can have the chance to see a teacher after school, attend clubs or honor societies, etc., as needed.
  • This academic year, as in the past several years, the PTSA has a budget of $5,000 to fund teacher grant applications to help with field trips, projects, and the like that serve to amplify and enrich the academic experiences of our students.
  • Teacher and staff appreciation endeavors are planned and funded by the PTSA.
  • The PTSA has a small budget set aside to assist with staff development.
  • The Applerouth SAT/ACT test prep courses and mock tests at West Potomac are run by the PTSA and course fee assistance is available when needed.

The PTSA is funded primarily through membership dues and fantastic support from our business community through sponsorships, as well as with restaurant nights. Thank you for joining the PTSA! Please continue to support the PTSA throughout the year however you can - by attending monthly meetings, filling volunteer slots and donation requests, participating in fundraisers, and – yes - taking on leaderships roles! It truly makes a difference in our school as we all work together to make West Potomac HS the best it can be.

SAT/ACT Test Prep and Updates

Test Prep Classes School Year 2019/20 - the schedule for the year is available to view and register! Visit https://www.applerouth.com/schools/8946/ to see dates for classes and mock tests.

Spring SAT and ACT Classes start  April 25 and prep for the official SAT or ACT in June. We will have summer SAT and ACT classes. These classes usually start near the end of July. The summer schedule will be posted to the test prep web page and announced in the NYC when finalized.

Set Your Testing Date:

Juniors who participate in extracurricular activities are strongly encouraged to look ahead at their activities schedule to determine the dates they are available to take the official SAT or ACT. Most students take the official tests more than once. Plan ahead and register early for most convenient testing locations!

Decide on Your Test Prep Strategy:

Once the testing date is set, determine your strategy for test prep. Self-directed free resources are available on Blackboard and the official testing sites. For those students who work better in a more structured classroom environment, the PTSA sponsors an on-campus test prep program (through Applerouth Tutoring).

Upcoming Mock Tests- Register https://www.applerouth.com/schools/8946/:

Mock SAT, 9:00am - 1:30pm, Room 438:

04/25/2020

05/16/2020

Mock ACT, 9:15am - 1:30pm, Room 437:

04/25/2020

05/16/2020

Why Take a Mock SAT or ACT?

Did you know that 54% of students show a natural increase the second time they take a real test? Use the mock to practice test time management skills – see if you have the ability to apply the content and strategies learned while studying when in an official test environment.  Test your mental endurance.  Earn confidence for the “real thing.”

Test Prep Scholarships: WPHS student need-based scholarships for mocks and classes are available through the College and Career Center Specialist Liz Carter.

PTSA Program Manager – Marilyn Aboff

Beyond the Page

Beyond the Page Theatre is pleased to present the rock musical, We Will Rock You, opening Friday, May 1st, in the Kogelman Theatre at West Potomac High School. Based on the music of rock band, Queen, We Will Rock You tells the story of Bohemians who struggle to restore the free exchange of thought, fashion, and live music in a distant future where everyone dresses, thinks, and acts the same. Musical instruments and composers are forbidden, and rock music is all but unknown. With more than 24 of Queen's biggest hits, including "We Will Rock You," "Somebody to Love," "Another One Bites the Dust," and "Bohemian Rhapsody," this musical reflects the scale and spectacle that earned the band its pinnacle position in rock history. Under the direction and choreography of Peelee Clark, with music direction by Cathy Manley, Savannah O’Leary and Gracie Schaub star as Galileo and Scaramouche respectively. Galileo and Scaramouche are both outcasts; Galileo hearing lyrics of long-lost rock songs in his head and Scaramouche chastised by her peers for her looks. Together they escape the conforms of mainstream society, under the rule of musical tyrant Killer Queen, played by Dabney Murphy, and discover their destiny. See why the legendary music of Queen has sustained itself through multiple generations of rock lovers.

We Will Rock You: School Edition runs May 1, 2, 7*, 8, 9 at 7pm and May 2 ,9* at 2pm. For more information on tickets visit us at westpotomactheatre.org.

Tickets are very limited for this year’s spring musical production so don’t delay.

As if We Will Rock You: High School Edition weren’t already shameless enough, here comes more musical silliness: May 7 at 7pm & 9 at 2pm. That’s correct, audience members will be able to sing along with the cast to Queen’s hits during these special performances. It’s become clear just how much these songs mean to people. Our sing-a-long nights will be a celebration of that; a chance for our energetic, passionate audiences to be a step closer to our talented cast.

You will not want to miss out on the fun, so make sure you attend Sing-A-Long We Will Rock You on May 7 & 9.
