Hello Woodson Families,

Given the most recent email from FCPS, I want to our families to know that we are all in this together.  While our physical building isn’t open for the community and while we are encouraged to maintain social distance, I encourage our students and families to continue to remain connected to one another.  Continue to text, talk on the phone, facetime and wave at one another from afar when you can.  Do not lose those connections and relationships built through school and activities.

I encourage all our students to remain active during this time.  The weather looks to be lovely over the next few weeks so get outside and walk, run, bike, skip, jump, sit, relax…  just be.   Take this time to unwind, breathe and literally take time to smell the flowers.

Please know that this is a pause in education, it won’t effect college and this time you gain with your family can have a positive impact in ways you never imagined.  If you have left something in the building that you need, Door 1 will be open Monday from 8AM – 2PM.

In addition, if your family is in need of food resources, please visit the Fairfax Food Resources website.

If you have questions about school throughout this time off, I am around and can be reached at cefloyd@fcps.edu and 703-503-4606.   Please note that this weekly email will be on hold until April unless there is something we need to send out to families.

Thank you for all your support of Woodson High School and please let us know if we can be of assistance during this time.

Sincerely,
Dr. Carlyn Floyd

DECA Conference

2. DECA International Conference

A total of 226 students from 14 Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) high schools were recognized as finalists at the Virginia DECA State Leadership Conference held February 28-March 1 in Virginia Beach. These students earned the right to attend the DECA International Career Development Conference April 29-May 2 in Nashville.

DECA is a career and technical student organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs to be college and career ready.  In the Commonwealth of Virginia, DECA members are enrolled in a marketing education class at their high schools.

3. School Health Services Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians and school staff members who interact with the school health rooms.

Electronic versions of the survey forms may be accessed at:

4. School Board Student Representative

Each year, in accordance with FCPS Policy 1802, FCPS students have the opportunity to apply for the position of the student representative to the School Board.  The student representative is not a member of the School Board but serves in a nonvoting, advisory capacity, representing the interests of the students of Fairfax County Public Schools.  Students who are currently in grades 9, 10, and 11 are eligible to apply, and they do not need to be current members of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SAC).

Applications are due Tuesday, March 24th. The application and related details can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/blog/application-2020-student-representative-school-board

Mental Health First Aid

5. Mental Health First Aid

Nine Woodson High students have completed Teen Mental Health First Aid training and are now certified mental health First-Aiders.

Teen Mental Health First Aid is being offered to students in the Our Minds Matter clubs in FCPS. The course offers evidence-based training that teaches teenagers the skills they need to recognize and help their friends who may be experiencing mental health or substance use problems or crises, and how to get the help of an adult quickly.

The Woodson students are the second cohort of FCPS students to be trained. Diane Ross, FCPS school psychologist, served as the instructor for the course.
