Message from the Principal

Langley HS

Greetings Saxon Families,

In light of the ongoing concerns regarding COVID19, novel coronavirus, I feel it is important to address the increasing coverage and concern regarding the virus. The primary message I want to communicate is that the risk to people in the U.S continues to be low and that common sense hygiene procedures are important including proper hand washing. Please keep students at home if they are sick.

Guidance to Parents:

  • Ensure that your most recent contact information (home phone, cell phone, and email addresses) are on file with the school.
  • Practice and educate your children on appropriate strategies to prevent or reduce the spread of a virus.
  • Monitor news programs and governmental agencies' websites for updated information on any health crisis.
  • Check the FCPS website for updates.

Updated coronavirus information is being posted to this FCPS webpage and additional information is available from the Fairfax County Health Department and the CDC. Also, please be advised that cleaning supplies used by FCPS does kill the virus.

In an abundance of caution, FCPS has made the decision to suspend all FCPS-sponsored incoming and outgoing international field trips and short-term visitations effective March 6, 2020 through June 30, 2020. Given the global outbreak of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has advised educational institutions to “consider postponing or canceling upcoming student foreign exchange programs.” This advice is motivated by an awareness that “students may face unpredictable circumstances, travel restrictions, and challenges in returning home or accessing health care while abroad.”

This suspension decision will impact Langley trips scheduled for Ireland, Japan and Russia. We are disappointed to take this measure as we recognize the educational value of international field trips and visitations for our students.  However, our first and most important priority is the safety and well-being of students and staff.

We will continue to work closely with health officials and monitor this evolving worldwide health situation.  Fairfax County Public Schools is working with travel vendors in reference to next steps.  Additional information will be forthcoming in the near future.  Should you have questions, please feel free to contact me.

This Sunday, March 8, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour! As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark.

Help your child stay safe by having him or her wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run or dart into the street or cross between parked cars.

Enjoy the weekend!

Fondly,

Kimberly Greer
