Saving an Elephant Using a Scientific Principle

elephant

An elephant, who accidentally fell into a dry, 25-foot deep well in Northeast India, was rescued thanks to quick-thinking rescuers' scientific knowledge.

The rescuers realized they could not pull the 30 year old elephant out of the well.  They decided to employ the physics law of buoyancy, known as the Archimedes' principle.

This principle helps explain how ships stay afloat.  The principle states: when a body is partially or fully immersed, it experiences an apparent loss in weight that is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the submerged part of the body.

In this case, the well was filled with enough water to displace the elephant's weight.  It took 3 hours and hundreds of gallons of water to allow the elephant to float to safety.

Thinkabit

Thinkabit and Chesapeake Bay Foundation Field Trips

Sponsored by TJ Partnership Foundation

Students have been attending field trips at the Thinkabit Labs and Chesapeake Bay Foundation thanks to a grant from the TJ Partnership Foundation!

At the Thinkabit Labs (which is a combination of an engineering lab, makerspace, and innovation learning space) students invent, design and build products to foster creativity and enhance the critical skills necessary for the technical workforce.  This helps students realize they can pursue a degree in a STEM field which could potentially lead to a STEM career!

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) Field Trip provides an opportunity for students to go on a boat for hands-on investigation of the Bay and its tributaries.

The CBF Field Trip enables students and teachers to conduct their own research through biological sampling, chemical analysis, and physical measurements. In addition to using critical thinking skills to evaluate the health of the ecological system, participants also gain a unique perspective in the relationship between water quality, fisheries, and economics.
