Message from Principal Magliola
Dear Jackson Families,
Throughout the year, I have shared that we as a staff have made an instructional priority to help our students develop higher-level thinking skills and we are making great progress in helping students better understand how to think critically in their learning. Bloom's Taxonomy, a framework for helping students transform knowledge acquisition into thinking and skills, was originally published by Benjamin Bloom in 1956 (https://cft.vanderbilt.edu/guides-sub-pages/blooms-taxonomy/). Established as an instructional construct and framework, Bloom's Taxonomy prioritizes helping students transform "what they know" into "skills and abilities."
Below are elements of Bloom's Taxonomy; these can be seen in our daily classroom Learning Targets and guide our students in making connections between content and the application of what student's are learning. This will continue to remain a daily focus for us at Jackson and I encourage you to explore these thinking routines with your child in further applying what they are learning into continuous practice. Please see the brief outline below for a more in-depth look at each skill beyond "Remembering" and "Understanding."
Applying: Ask your child how they would solve a given real-life problem. Ask why they think something is significant. Ask your child to continue a story or predict what would happen in a given situation.
Analyzing: Ask your child to identify motives or causes from real-life stories. Encourage them to conduct an interview or survey. Have your child make a flow chart, family tree or role play a real-life situation.
Evaluating: Ask your child to form and defend an opinion on a subject. Kids, especially teens are pretty good at this one. Example: encourage your child to write a letter to an editor or evaluate a character’s actions in a story.
Creating: Ask your child to put together several bits of old information to form a new idea. Such as, ask them to create, design or invent a new item, proposal or plan. This requires a bit of creativity and the ability to think in the abstract.
Enjoy your evening and we look forward to seeing you in the building in the near future.
Mike

Elected officials from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and the FCPS School Board representing each District have been invited and will present their priorities for the year. Elected officials will spend time meeting with constituents from their regions and discussing concerns.
