Wolf News March 4

RAA

Oak Hill staff members were guest readers as part of Read Across America week.

Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

I am beginning to think that the recent mild temperatures and 60-degree days are more desirable than shoveling many inches of snow! We all have missed our snow days with hot chocolate, sled riding and long games of Monopoly; however, the daffodils, sun and longer days are much welcomed in March!

I hope students enjoyed their day off yesterday. All FCPS staff participated in Cultural Proficiency and Equity in Schools training where we were able to reflect and look at current practices in our school. Additional staff were also able to participate in Crisis Training with Mr. Credle and myself where, again, we examined current procedures and discussed potential what ifs to gauge our reasoning and reactions. While finding daycare can be a huge imposition for you, we truly value this time as a staff to learn together and keep current in our field.

As you know, we have our annual Lees Corner vs. Oak Hill basketball game next Friday at Chantilly High School. We will be selling spirit wear all next week before school in our lobby. A pep assembly will take place Friday afternoon to send off our 6th grade teams with high energy and good vibes!

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to further support your child’s learning and experience at Oak Hill.  My door is always open!

Sincerely,

Holly DeVore, Principal

Read Across America Information

read

Read Across America is being celebrated this week.  Throughout the week there will be activities that focus on celebrating wonderful books, talented authors, and our joy for reading. Teachers will have opportunities to schedule guest readers (Oak Hill specialists and administration), book bag sharing, AND… Book Character Dress-Up Day.

Book Character Dress-Up Day is scheduled for Friday, March 6.  Dressing-up is optional for students, of course. It is meant to be a fun and engaging way for kids to immerse themselves in the role of a story character.  Elaborate costumes are not necessary!  Just have fun with it!

Also scheduled for Friday, March 6th will be our “Drop Everything and Read Across Oak Hill” event.  This 20 minute period will take place at the end of the day and EVERYONE in the building will be involved with reading.  Don’t be surprised if you show up and find all staff with their noses in a book.  We will ALL be reading! 😊

Tip of the Week

tip

Students’ mindsets about mathematics are foundational to their attitudes, beliefs, and long-term success in mathematics. Students need to develop a positive, growth mindset about mathematics in order to access challenges and develop a deeper understanding of concepts.  In order to help your child(ren) develop deeper understanding, you may find it helpful to instill a “mindset” using these reflective prompts within your day. Consider expanding the questions below as you talk about school at home…

• How will you challenge yourself today?
• What might you try differently that you haven’t done before today?
• How did your brain grow today?
• Did you make any interesting mistakes?
• What can you learn from this experience or mistake?
• Is there anything you’re wondering about after today?
• What challenges did you encounter today?
• What did you persevere through today?
• What is something you could do today that you couldn’t do last week?
• What are you excited to continue thinking about tomorrow?
• What/who helped you be successful today?

School Health Services Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD.  Electronic versions of the survey forms may be accessed here.

The survey will take less than five minutes to complete and will provide the FCHD with valuable information.  Your participation in this important endeavor is appreciated.
