Annandale Community:
Thank you to the many parents and community members for the warm welcome at the PSTA meeting on Tuesday night. As I stated at the meeting, parent involvement and support is an essential element of all great schools. I look forward to partnering with our students, staff, parents and community as we work together to make Annandale the very best school it can be for learning.
This week, we hosted the IB MYP Personal Project Fair, which helps students develop confidence as principled, lifelong learners. Specifically, students are asked within the scope of the project to research their topic or idea, and create a product or take action in some way. Through this independent inquiry, students consolidate their learning and develop important skills--for further learning and life beyond the classroom. Examples include students who documented the process of learning to build furniture, analyze running gaits and techniques, learn a new sport, learn to cook, and many more. Special thanks to Meagan Padgett, MYP Coordinator for coordinating this terrific event.
Finally, on Friday night, I was a judge at the first annual “A-Town Got Talent” event. The show not only showcased the many talents of our students, it also highlighted what makes Annandale special: our diversity and how our students support and encourage each other when they take risks. Special thanks to Jessica Aires and the leadership students for hosting an amazing event.

February 26 - Band Pre-Assessment Concert: Please join us Wednesday evening for our pyramid pre-assessment concert at 7:00 pm in the auditorium. The students of the AHS Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble have been diligently preparing for their performances at the Virginia Music Education Association (VMEA) / Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association (VBODA) District X Concert Band Assessment. At this event, the ensembles will be evaluated by a panel of adjudicators on their prepared program as well as sight reading. This concert will be a dress rehearsal of sorts for the assessment event. The Holmes MS and Poe MS Symphonic Bands will also perform on this concert.
March 6 - Just World Festival: The Just World Interact Club of Annandale High School is holding its 14th Annual Just World Festival on March 6 from 4:00-6:00pm at Annandale High School. The festival aims to teach youth that they are not only a part of their local community, but a global one. Through our goal, we want to educate both youth and community leaders alike about global issues, environmental issues, fair trade, human rights, and most importantly social action. This year we are partnering with Heritage Night to host a community dinner in the Cafeteria at 6:00pm. Everyone can eat together before Heritage Night which starts at 7:00pm.
You can participate in the Just World Festival in one of the following ways:
1. Just come to enjoy the festival which includes food, an interactive exhibition hall, workshops, and cultural events. 2. Register to host a booth in our exhibition hall and/or sell items in our fair trade marketplace. 3. Donate to our festival raffle or general fund to host the event. March 23 - Red Cross Blood Drive: Annandale High School will host its 8th annual spring blood drive. The Red Cross Club invites students, faculty and family to donate blood for our community. Every day, hospitals provide lifesaving blood to patients in need. Your willingness to donate blood remains vital to the lives of the patients that we serve, not only locally, but across the country. Important Information
Academic Advising Updates - School counselors continue to meet individually with students to assist them in exploring their academic and postsecondary/career goals. Students will review their transcripts and verify their course selections for the coming school year. These sessions will take place during students’ English classes. Academic advising for sophomores and juniors is completed. Freshmen academic advising is now being held and will continue through tomorrow, February 24. Parents can always view the course selections via their SIS ParentVUE account. Please email Paula DiSalvo, Director of Student Services at pdisalvo@fcps.edu if you have any questions.
Sign Up for Weekly Progress Reports: All parents/guardians of middle and high school students who have registered for a SIS ParentVUE Account and have a primary email address recorded in SIS ParentVUE can receive Weekly Progress Reports via email. This report provides a summary of your student(s) grades for the current quarter.
To activate the Weekly Progress Reports via email, login to your SIS ParentVUE Account and first verify that you have a primary email address within the system. It is listed under the “My Account” tab. If it is blank, enter the email address where you would like to receive the progress reports and click on update account. Once confirmed, parents/guardians are able to activate and select their preferences for receiving these reports within the SIS ParentVUE “My Account” tab.
Weekly progress reports for all of your middle and high school students will be included in one email. For questions about a specific progress report or grade you can login into your SIS ParentVUE Account to find detailed grade book information. Additionally, your student’s teacher is always the best resource to answer any grade book questions that you may have. Weekly Progress Report Parent Quick Reference Guide.
Yearbooks on Sale Now! - Parents are encouraged to purchase a yearbook today! The cost is $85. You can purchase your yearbook online at https://yearbookforever.com or bring in cash/check to Ms. Hanneman. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Hanneman at jehanneman@fcps.edu. Please note, yearbooks will be distributed to students at Annandale near the end of the school year.

Career Center Updates
The College and Career Center and the Career Center Specialist assist students with their college, career and employment searches. Students can find a wide variety of resources on colleges, careers, scholarships, financial aid, part-time and full-time employment opportunities, and SAT, ACT, and TOEFL registration. The goal of the Career Center is to help students make informed career decisions about their post-secondary plans, which may include four-year colleges, two-year colleges, technical schools, apprenticeships, military, full-time employment, or gap year opportunities.

Attendance Matters
When students miss too many days of school, they fall behind and struggle to keep up with their classmates. Whether the days missed are due to illness, truancy, or for any other reason, the end result for the student is the same: learning time is lost. Children and adolescents will get sick at times and may need to stay at home, but we want to work with you to help minimize the number of days your child misses school.
