Topic: Supporting Each Student for Success

In this Principal’s Café, we will begin with a brief presentation on what our Multi-Tiered Levels of Support (MTSS) looks like at WSES, how we target interventions for students who may be struggling academically or behaviorally, as well as discuss the special education identification and 504 process and resources.

The remainder of the evening, we plan to provide you time for a Q&A with a panel including:

  • WSES special education parents
  • Special education teachers Caroline Bustos and Sarah Moore
  • Classroom teachers Katrina Glista, Regina Uribe and Jenn Walrarth
  • Math Resource teacher, James Koontz
  • Reading Teacher, Connie Carney
  • School administrators, Kelly Sheers and Satonya Dews

We will address questions from participants including topics such as supporting student's with Dyslexia, ADHD, Autism, Interventions etc.

Kindergarten Orientation

Attention parents of rising Kindergartners! 

You and your rising Kindergartener are invited to attend WSES’s Kindergarten Orientation on Tuesday, April 14, 2020 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. 

Registration is not required. 

Learn about your child’s future school day, meet WSES’s Kindergarten team, and your child can meet future classmates and be able to see the school as well.  We hope to see you there!

SCA Pennies for Patients Spirit Week
Pennies for Patients is calling all heroes to join our squad.

Be on the lookout for more information coming next week that will allow your child to participate in this rewarding event that emphasizes the importance of social and emotional learning and gaining the experience of helping both children and adults in their fight against blood cancer.  Our SCA sponsored Pennies for Patients Spirit Week February 24-February 28th (is a great way to get involved and join the fight against cancer.  You can also check out our school website to donate online at https://events.lls.org/pages/nca/West-Springfield-Elementary-School-2020. We look forward to our school-wide kick-off.

Monday, February 24: Pajama Pennies Day  (Don’t forget to put your pennies in the pocket of your Favorite Pajamas)

Tuesday, February 25:  Neon Nickels Day  (Wear your brightest neon and bring nickels)

Wednesday, February 26: Dazzling Dimes Day  (Donate dimes and wear something shiny or something that makes you different and unique)

Thursday, February 27:  Crazy Quarters Day  (Wear a crazy hat and/or socks to school and cash in your quarters)

Friday, February 28:  Team up for Leukemia (Wear your favorite team’s jersey or colors and bring any size donation)

Read Across America
“The Read Across America Challenge is back until Monday March 9th.  We are challenging each mustang to read at least 30 minutes a night.  For every 15 minutes a student reads they get to color in a state in their packet and those students who read enough to color in the entire United States map will be entered the raffle for a prize.  There will be 7 grand prizes one for each grade level. If you have any questions please email Mr. Rigsby at lsrigsby@fcpsl.edu or Mrs. Carney at cmcarney@fcps.edu So, let’s Read Across America Mustangs!!”

Girls on the Run
Girls on the Run is returning to West Springfield Elementary School for its second season! GOTR is a physical activity based positive youth development program for girls in 3rd-8th grade.  The Program teaches life skills through dynamic interactive lessons and running games.  The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment, while establishing a lifetime appreciation of heath and fitness. 

Staring the week of March 2nd. The team will meet every Monday and Friday in the cafeteria! The programs culminates in a celebration 5K at the end of the season on a weekend! The standard program fee is $175 and includes 20 lessons/practices, a t-shirt, water bottle, entry into the 5K, a 5K medal, and more.

Financial assistance is available for anyone who needs it, with the lowest program registration cost being $22 for the season. Registration is now open at www.gotrnova.org . If you have any questions, please feel free to email Ms. Swanton: mcswanton@fcps.edu

Science Judges Needed
Have a passion and/or background in science? WSES is looking for qualified individuals to serve as judges at the Science Expo. Judges should enjoy speaking with and encouraging elementary students.
