Science Happenings at Timber Lane

Third quarter is underway, and there are many wonderful activities happening in all TLES classrooms that make our science curriculum objectives engaging and accessible for students!  Here are just a FEW examples…

Our 1st graders recently learned that scientists classify animals by their body parts.  Then, they created their own 3-D “funny fish” with new body parts that could help their fish move in new and different ways.

Meanwhile, 5th graders investigated the properties of Light and Sound through many fun and meaningful hands-on activities.

Our 2nd graders, after learning all about weather, designed, built, and tested houses that can withstand a hurricane or a tornado!  Now, they are exploring Matter and will use this knowledge to design a water source for wildlife.  3

rd graders, who are currently discovering the wonders of Ancient Egypt,  worked as engineers to create a model of a “shaduf’ which is a simple machine that uses water from the Nile to irrigate their farms.  They will soon start a new Science unit on Soils.

Our 4th graders just developed tours of the Solar System after learning about the planets and our weather patterns, and will soon begin exploring Electricity and Magnetism.

In addition to Science activities,  many students have had opportunities to work with programming kits (Ozobots, Micro:Bits, Lego WeDo 2.0) on loan through the FCPS STEAM department.  These kits provide engineering and coding activities that provide fun and 21st century skills experiences for ALL learners!

Finally, our Green Team (a large group of dedicated 5th graders) has developed an action plan to improve our recycling program and are highly motivated to make Timber Lane a more sustainable school environment.

Digital Citizenship REMINDERS

Timber Lane parents and students, as we introduce continue our use of technology at Timber Lane Elementary, it is important to remember to: 1) Keep Your Passwords Private; 2) Share with Care – Think Before You Click!; and 3) Shutdown your computer properly by clicking the power icon and SHUTDOWN on your computer.  Wait until all of the lights on your computer are off – then, plug your computer in so that it is charged and ready to go the next time you need it!  Keep your computer healthy!

URGENT REMINDER!  Timber Lane ES has invested a significant amount in technology to support student learning at our school.  Laptops, headphones, computer mice, and power cords are used daily within our school.  It is VERY important that students care for these and other essential tools, such as books, writing tools, and math manipulatives so that our learning community can continue to thrive.  Please reinforce the importance of contributing to our caring culture by showing strong digital citizenship that respects the technology that has been provided at our school so that we can use it for many years to come.
