Presidents' Day

We hope you are enjoying your extended weekend!

Last week, we celebrated our 100th day of school, Valentine's Day, and today is President's Day! School certainly feels like a celebration of learning!

See you tomorrow!

“Empty Bowls” is an international project to fight hunger, personalized by artists and art organizations on a community level.

Flint Hill Elementary School hosted its second, annual "Empty Bowls, Full Hearts" event on Friday, February 14th. We appreciate every parent who came to spend lunch time with their special Valentine, and we are equally as grateful for the many donations that were collected for those who do not have enough to eat.

A special thanks to Ms. McAlister and Ms. Gong, our art teachers, who ensured that every student in the building had a bowl to fill with popcorn, not just as a snack, but as a reminder that while our bowls and hearts are full each day, others may not be--and that we can do something about it! Thank you to Mrs. McAlister, our art teacher's mom, for volunteering to help out, too!

Parents, we are grateful that you continue to share this message of compassion and generosity with your children throughout the year.

Reading and the Brain

DedicatED: Reading to Rewire

For children at risk of dyslexia, early reading at home may reroute the brain's networks, building new capacity.

By: Leah Shafer

"Reading with parents and caregivers — key to building literacy skills and a love of reading in every child — may be particularly valuable for children at risk for developing dyslexia. New research reveals that strong home literacy practices may actually reshape the brains of such children by creating new neural pathways for reading. With family support, these children may be able to develop alternative networks that help them decode and comprehend words on a page."

kindergarten registration

Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration is upon us! We welcome parents of rising kindergarten students to register their child at their earliest convenience. This helps us get acquainted with our new students and allows us to have our numbers so we can best staff our kindergarten classrooms. Please don't hesitate to share this information with a neighbor, friend, or colleague who lives within our boundaries. We want to ensure we get students registered as early as possible--in addition to registering for our Bridge to Kindergarten program this summer!

Bridge to Kindergarten: Year 3!

We are excited to share with you our plans for a two-week kindergarten induction program held here at Flint Hill! This program will run from July 13th-24th, and from 9 am-12 pm. During this two week window, students become acclimated to Flint Hill, learn kindergarten expectations, and participate in a variety of games and other endeavors that support social emotional growth and the development of friendships. If you are interested in enrolling your son or daughter, please complete this Google Form. In addition, we hope you will share this information with families who may be new to the Flint Hill community!

Gentle Reminder: Your child needs to be registered to attend this program. Please see Mrs. Shirley Eason, our Student Information Assistant, to submit registration paperwork.

Kindergarten orientation is on April 13th, from 1-3 pm.

Help Us Personalize Our Yearbook!

In an effort to continue to personalize the yearbook and highlight this year's theme, #GritGraceGoals, the Yearbook Committee is extending an opportunity for students to send in quotes, poems, and artwork. Please note that not every submission will be placed in the yearbook. Deadline to submit ideas and illustrations is March 6th. Submissions can be placed in the basket located in the front office.

Tweet of the Week

We continue to highlight learning experiences that support the acquisition of Portrait of a Graduate attributes and skills across our classrooms.

Students, across all grade levels, demonstrated their creative thinking as they designed ceramic bowls for the "Empty Bowls, Full Hearts" event! Check out our third graders in Ms. Tagliareni's class!

For more information on Portrait of a Graduate, ask your child how they are a communicator, collaborator, critical and creative thinker, goal-directed and resilient individual, or ethical and global citizen. Or, click here!

Request for Snack Donations

The FHES Snack Pantry plays an important role in providing snacks for students in need. With your generous support, we are able to continue these efforts. If you are able to send in nut free, individual sized snacks (pretzels, granola bars, Goldfish, etc.), we would be so grateful!

In addition, the cafeteria is looking for wipes to keep the tables clean. All donations can be sent to the main office.

If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Williams, FHES counselor.
