Franklin Weekly Update - February 14

Dear Franklin Families,

We celebrated Kindness Week at Franklin during the past five days. This was a great opportunity for our students and staff to reflect on the many ways we can show kindness. Acts of kindness can be big or small. They can be seen or unseen. A smile, a quick hello, or a helping hand in a moment of need will all make a big difference to the person who receives this act of kindness.  I was recently reminded of the words of Maya Angelou who said "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Thank you for all that you do to help our students demonstrate kindness and compassion toward others every day. 

I would like to invite all of you to one of two Parent Coffees that will take place during the first week in March. The first one will be on Tuesday, March 3 from 5:00 PM – 5:45 PM and the second one will take place on Wednesday, March 4 from 9:00 AM – 9:45 AM. During both events, I will take the opportunity to tell you a little bit about myself, to discuss my goals for my first few months at Franklin, and to hear your voice as Franklin parents and community members.

Grade 8 Writing SOL

Eighth grade students will be taking the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Grade 8 Writing Test between March 10 and March 13.  It is important that your child attend school on these days. If possible, please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school during this time period. It is also important that your child have a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast before testing. If you become aware of an unavoidable conflict that could result in your child missing a testing day, please notify your child’s school as soon as possible.

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) requires that all students in grade 8 take the English: Writing Standards of Learning (SOL) test. The test has two components: multiple choice response and a short paper response. In order to obtain a score, your child must complete both components.

The purpose of SOL testing is to provide information about student achievement to the parent, school, school division, and state. In most cases, test scores are available for parents by the end of the school year. More information about how and when you will receive your child’s scores will be shared closer to these dates.

Students may not bring electronic devices into testing rooms, including phones and smartwatches

Franklin MS Writing SOL Schedule

Tuesday, March 10 (Odd Day: 1,3,5,7,LS)

  • Students in odd period English classes will take the multiple choice component starting at 7:30.

Wednesday, March 11 (Even Day: 2,4,5,6,LS)

  • Students in even period English classes will take the multiple choice component starting at 7:30.

Thursday, March 12 (Modified Odd Day: 3,7,5,1,LS)

  • Students in odd period English classes will take the short paper component starting at 7:30.

Friday, March 13 (Modified Even Day: 4,6,5,2,LS)

  • Students in even period English classes will take the short paper component starting at 7:30.

 

SOL Testing and FCPSOn Devices

All Franklin students will be using their FCPSOn Devices for SOL testing. Please ensure your student’s laptop is working and that they have their power charger.

*Students will need to do health checks in their Learning Seminars on March 4th through the 6th with their teachers to ensure that their devices are updated with the latest software*

All students taking an SOL test will need to bring a fully charged laptop and power charger with the exception of students who opted out and use their own device. 

Failing to bring in a device on testing days could impact a student's ability to participate in testing on the scheduled SOL testing date.

Franklin MS After-School Programs

Mark your calendars – the Franklin vs. Rocky Run Basketball Game will be on Friday, March 27, at 6:00 pm at Chantilly HS.

Basketball Team Tryout Information:

  • Girls team tryouts will be on Wednesday, February 19

General After-School Information

  • The after-school program will not convene on the following days before holidays; 2/14/2020; 4/3/2020; 5/22/2020
  • Transportation is available to students staying after school on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays – departing Franklin at 4:45 PM. The late bus schedule is posted on the after-school bulletin board in the cafeteria and on your child’s grade level google classroom. Please be aware that the after-school late bus numbers and routes may differ from your child’s normal school day bus route. Please use the Kiss-and- Ride to pick-up your child from the After-School Program.
  • Please see below for the After-School activities for Monday, February 10 – Friday, February 14.
  • Students who plan to stay after-school must notify their parent/guardian BEFORE the 2:15 dismissal bell and should report to the cafeteria with all their belongings after the 2:15 dismissal bell for after-school check-in.
  • The majority of clubs/activities is open enrollment; however, due to limited capacities some will require registration. If registration is needed, it will be posted on your child’s grade level google classroom.

This event will provide information for families on how to help students develop a healthy relationship with technology as well as highlighting what types of learning experiences our students are having in our classrooms.

  • Teacher Panel addressing the importance of media balance both inside and outside of the classroom.

6:30 pm - 7:30 pm: Showcase of Student Learning

Spotlight on Student Learning

NJHS Students and Parents (8th Grade Students)

A few reminders about NJHS membership. In order to maintain status as an NJHS member, students are required to:

  • Complete 15 service hours in service of an FCPS school (separate from and in addition to Civics Service Learning Hours)
  • Maintain a 3.75 cumulative GPA
  • Uphold the Pillars of NJHS

Final GPA calculations will be done at the end of the 3rd quarter and service hours are due Friday, May 1, 2020.  There will be no exceptions made to the service hour deadline, hours must be completed and have a verification form turned in to Ms. Bridenbaugh.  Students who are at risk for not maintaining their GPA after 2nd quarter grades have been added will be contacted by NJHS sponsors in the coming days and a letter will be mailed home to parents of those students
