Jackson Journal 2.16.20

Message from Principal Magliola

Dear Jackson Families,

My message this week is one of reflection and appreciation for the support we receive from our school board representatives. This last Wednesday, Dr. Ricardy Anderson, our Mason District representative, visited Jackson and spent time with me learning more about our incredible students and programs. We toured the building, visited classrooms, and discussed the bright future in store for our school. Our conversation was meaningful and encouraging as Dr. Anderson expressed her thoughts and vision for her work as our representative. While I was happy to share and answer all of her questions in an emphatic fashion, listening to her express her passions and purpose for serving our schools was highly captivating.

Dr. Anderson brings a school-based perspective rich with experience and understands firsthand the work we as educators are doing for our students on a daily basis. Please consider attending an upcoming school board meeting or following Dr. Anderson (@Ricardy4Mason) to share your thoughts; she is eager to hear how she can best support Jackson and represent us.

To close out this evening, I'd like to share a link I found interesting in how incorporating literacy helps students develop a deeper understanding of math (numeracy: problem-solve, reason and analyze information). We know the importance of school-wide literacy and numeracy and as I was able to visit classrooms this week, I was greatly encouraged as students informed me of the activities they were engaged in and how it connected to their lives. To have students explain why they "answered what they answered" is, at times, more powerful in our assessing of student progress than getting the answer right itself! Once students are able to independently rationalize their thinking, we know they will be able to engage in more complex learning. Enjoy the quick read and the rest of your holiday weekend. Please remember we do not have school tomorrow and will return on Tuesday, Feb. 18th.

The next Food For Neighbors Red Bag collection event is coming up on Saturday, March 7th.

At our January 11th collection event, we collected food (Red Bags) from 80 donors! Over 40 volunteers either drove to pick up those Red Bags or they sorted all of the food in the Jackson cafeteria. All of the contributions from the January event stayed within the LJMS community.

For our next event on March 7th, our goal is to have 200 committed Red Bag donors. We are currently about 50 donors away from meeting that goal. The more Red Bags we collect, the more food we will have to help support our school community. Two hundred committed donors would make a very big impact on families in our community facing food insecurity.

You can find more information on the Food For Neighbors Red Bag program, how to volunteer to support our goal, and how we implement the program at Luther Jackson at these links:

See our Tigers in action...

We welcomed Dr. Ricardy Anderson, one of our newly elected School Board representatives, for a day of visiting classrooms, students, and staff. We also celebrated team-building in AVID, discovered energy alternatives through lunar exploration, placed 3rd in Charlottesville during the Science Olympiad tournament, created heartfelt Valentine's Day cards for teachers, met as departments to plan our next steps for instruction, and salute Buddy Hield for bringing the NBA 3 point crown to Sacramento, CA (my hometown)!
