GBE's Super Counselors Ms. Clark, Ms. Loht and Ms. Shin

Counselors Week

National School Counseling Week 2020 was celebrated this week to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems.  School counselors have a tremendous impact in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.  GBE would like to thank our counselors, Ms. Clark, Ms. Loht and Ms. Shin, for all of their hard work and dedication.

If you or your child would like to send a note of thanks to Ms. Clark, Ms. Loht or Ms. Shin through the FCPS Cares recognition program, please click here.

Salad Bar Coming to GBE

Salad Bar

We are excited to announce that GBE is going to the next level of providing our students and staff with a healthier lunch!

Beginning February 20, 2020, we will implement the “Real Food for Kids” Salad Bar. All students will select their fruits and vegetables for lunch from the salad bar, and then they may complete their lunch by choosing either the salad bar protein and grains or the hot entrée listed on the menu for that day.  Students will “practice” salad bar etiquette and new procedures for the lunch line before the salad bar opens.  Information was sent home in Wednesdays Folder!

Important Message about Student Absences

Absences

Absences Add Up! Schedule Family Travel During School Breaks

Fairfax County Public Schools is required to keep track of student participation in school, through attendance reporting to the state of Virginia. You may have received one or more calls or electronic messages when your student did not arrive to school on time, or when the school was not notified that the student would be absent.

It is vital that parents access the school attendance phone line or attendance e-mail when they know that their students will miss school. Knowing the reason why students are absent helps school personnel understand if a specific reason (such as illness or family hardship) is keeping them out of school.  Vacations are considered unexcused locally, and the county may notify you via email even if you have already notified the school regarding the upcoming absences. When parents know that their students must be out for a specific period (more than a day), they can access and submit a prearranged absence form. This must be done at least three to five days in advance of the absence. This gives administrators and teachers time to consider the work, tests, and projects the student may need to turn in on the student’s return to school. Parents should avoid end-of-semester or end-of-course exam periods; state testing periods; etc., when making plans. Please make every effort to arrange travel during school breaks.

Absences add up, and research indicates that missing 10 percent of the school year, for any reason, can have a negative impact on student success. Learn more about FCPS’ attendance expectations
