February is Heart Health Month

February is Heart Health Awareness Month

The first proclamation of Heart Health Awareness Month was issued in February 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson, nine years after he had a heart attack.  Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans but there are things we can do to diminish incidents of heart disease.

While science is advancing medicine in exciting new ways, unhealthy lifestyle choices combined with rising obesity rates in both kids and adults have hindered progress fighting heart disease.

The good news is that heart disease is preventable in most cases with healthy choices, which include not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, controlling blood sugar and cholesterol, treating high blood pressure, getting at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a week and getting regular checkups.

Healthcare College and Career Fair

2nd Annual Healthcare College and Career Fair

On January 27, 2020 when FCPS high school students could have been sleeping in due to a scheduled Teacher Workday, upwards of 400 students and parents visited the Healthcare College and Career Fair at Falls Church High School hosted by Falls Church Academy. At the Fair were 22 organizations comprised of colleges and businesses who offer healthcare education, services and career options, all were on hand to answer students and parents’ questions about healthcare career directions.  One career attendee said “The students and their parents were definitely interested in all the resources and opportunities that were provided to them.  They had so many great questions.  It was such a pleasure to be a part of this fair and be able to provide these eager students with wonderful opportunities.”

This Fair will be offered again next year as part of the HOSA District Competition day in January 2021.
