Annual SpeakUp National Technology Survey

All parents, students, teachers, and administrators are invited to participate in the annual SpeakUp national survey on digital technology. The SpeakUp survey helps FCPS gauge how technology is being used to support learning and identify areas of success and challenge. We can also see how FCPS compares to other school districts via the national results of this survey. Please consider taking this survey by visiting https://speakup.tomorrow.org/ and selecting “Take Survey.” The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete and will be available until February 21. We will be notifying FCPS parents and students of this opportunity as well. We hope you will make your voice heard, and share this message with your staff so that their voices may also be heard.  For more information about the survey, please visit: https://tomorrow.org/Speakup/. Thank you for your help!

FCPS Restorative Justice project focuses on accountability, character development, and school and community safety.

Restorative justice practice is a philosophy based on a set of principles for responding to harm and wrongdoing that is victim-centered and focuses on offender accountability to those who were harmed, and to the laws or rules that were broken. Restorative justice is a formal process facilitated by trained, skilled facilitators that brings together those impacted by wrongdoing to discuss the incident, understand who has been affected and to create an agreement for reparation of harm.

Super Transition Saturday - Career and Transition Services Event

On Saturday, February 22, 2020, Career and Transition Services (CTS), the FCPS Parent Resource Center, and several Fairfax County adult service providers will host “Super Transition Saturday” from 9:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at Luther Jackson Middle School. This is a free event for parents/guardians and educators of students of all ages with IEPs. Breakout sessions will cover postsecondary education support, the importance of student self-determination beginning in the elementary years, employment support programs, future planning considerations, such as funding needed for services, and CTS support services that are available to students as they progress through the secondary years toward graduation and beyond. A highlight of the day is a parent/guardian and student panel representing a range of challenges and successes. Members of the panel will convey personal experiences and answer parent/guardian and student questions from their perspectives of having been through the transition process. The snow date is March 14, 2020.

JOIN THE SANDBURG PTA

The PTA is an active organization that sponsors several activities and events throughout the school year for the benefit of our students, teachers and staff here at CSMS. Joining the PTA provides instant financial support for our students and is a great way to stay informed about what’s happening at Carl Sandburg Middle School.

Over $24,000 was raised from PTA membership, donations and fundraising events last year. Those funds were used to support teacher appreciation activities, lighting for the auditorium, technology for the library, clubs, cafeteria needs and education department requests. Help us exceed that amount this year by joining the Carl Sandburg Middle School PTA!

While fundraising is a focus for the PTA, volunteers are even more important to the success of our organization. There will be many opportunities for parents to volunteer their time this year...a few include our upcoming Season of Giving events that take place around Thanksgiving and Christmas, the Library will need volunteers to help with the Book Fair and the Career Fair. We can always use extra hands for the setup of our Teacher Appreciation events, as well as support on Chik-Fil-A nights and at our Student-Teacher Basketball game in the Spring.  The PTA welcomes all new members and encourages everyone to get involved in any way you can. Keep an eye out for these volunteer requests.

To join the PTA go to http://carlsandburgpta.ch2v.com/content.asp?PageID=0 and select the membership level that best suits you. There is also an option to make a tax-deductible donation, and 100% of all donations go directly to the school!

Email questions to PTA Membership Chair Rachel Meadows at rachelcmeadows@gmail.com.

PTA information, including details about fundraisers, teacher appreciation and membership can be found on our website at this link: http://carlsandburgpta.ch2v.com. We also post regularly to social media, so follow Carl Sandburg Middle School PTA on both Facebook and Twitter.
