Parents as Partners - February Seminar on Equity

February Parents as Partners seminar will address Equity, Diversity, and Cultural Responsiveness and will take place tonight, Tuesday, February 11th at 6 p.m. in Cafeteria A

In response to the Family Engagement Survey administered during the 2018-19 School Year, Woodson is focusing on sharing information with parents to help parents improve their child’s learning and to identify and develop social and emotional skills for students to be successful.  In addition, we are looking for ways to maintain two-way communication between families and the school.

One way we are engaging families is through monthly parent seminars.  In addition to the PTSO meetings (held on the second Tuesday of each month), administrators and counselors will plan and deliver a monthly seminar based on various topics.

At WT Woodson, we believe in a caring culture where all students are valued, respected, and appreciated. Each student has their own identity, culture, and tradition. In line with the activities that our equity leads implement around identity, culture, and tradition, February’s Parents as Partners seminar will allow parents to have a deeper conversation with their students.

The PTSO Board for 2020-2021 Needs You!

Would you like to get more involved in the PTSO next year? Do you have great ideas to help our Woodson community?

The Woodson Wrestling Team entered the post season with 12 wrestlers competing in the Patriot District Championships Saturday February 8th..

A special congratulations to Anthony Martin who became the first Woodson wrestler in school history to win 4 consecutive District Championship Titles.

All other place winners were:
2nd Place - Joey Martin and Ryan Yoder
3rd Place - Sammy Yu, Philip Clanor and Izak Johnson
4th Place - Andrew Lee, Jay Swallow and Tommy Dunn
5th Place - Gabe Cetron
6th Place - Drew Kulenguski and Wayne Burger

All of our wrestlers qualified to compete in next weekend's Regional Championship at TC Williams.

WTW Varsity Girls Basketball (16-5, 6-3 Patriot District) opened its week with a tough loss to West Springfield, 36-32.  The bounces went the Spartans’ way in this one, and a 4th quarter rally by the Cavs came up just short.  Maggie McGuire continued her double-figure scoring streak, leading the Cavs with 12 points and 8 boards. Sarah Wilson played her usual all-around defensive game limiting their top scorer to 6 and added 6 points.  Allie Maahs hit two 3s to also score 6.  Abby Pesansky scored 4, Zoe Hite hit a big late 3 to make the game close, and Anna Wiggins hit a late free throw to keep the Cavs in it.   The Cavs bounced back at Robinson on Friday with a big 48-41 win to stay in the Patriot District title hunt.  Allie Maahs had a true breakout game, hitting seven 3s to lead the Cavs with a career-high 21.   Seniors Maggie McGuire and Sarah Wilson took over down the stretch to keep the Rams at bay.  Maggie ended with 13 points and 14 rebounds and Sarah hit 6 big free throws late.  Anna Wiggins ended with 6 and Levi Weinberger hit 3 free throws. Sarah Wilson drew the defensive assignment against Robinson's top offensive player and turned in yet another shutdown performance, limiting this player to 0-15 shooting.

The Cavs face Fairfax at home on Tuesday in a showdown for the regular season Patriot District championship and first-round bye.  Come to Red Jenkins Gym and cheer these girls on!

The Cav's Boys Varsity Basketball team completed the program sweep (all three levels winning) on Feb 4th by taking out West Springfield (57-50).  Joe Pesansky led the Cavs with 20 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists.  Andre Pacheco also continues his solid play with 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 assists.  Donovan Boyce also finished with 10 points and 5 assists.  The boys suffered a tough home loss in overtime to Robinson on Senior Night Friday 2/7.  Boyce and Devin Cuviello finished with 14 points apiece and Pacheco put up another 9 points. Fellow seniors Bobby Case and John Faulkner scored 4 and 5 points respectively and Ethan Lash had 2 points/3 boards and played solid defense throughout.  James Jin also started for the Cavs and had 2 assists.  The Cavs finish regular season play against Fairfax away on Tuesday 2/11.

Woodson Rifle Team is ending the regular season on a high note.  On Saturday, February 1st Senior, Stephanie Ricigliano and Juniors, Meredith Ivey, Victoria Kopelen, and Nate Wehrlen broke the league record with a combined score of 1178.  The record had previously been set by Woodson Rifle Team in 2016.  This scoring team gave up only 22 shots out of 1200 in the match against Centreville.  Needless to say Woodson Rifle varsity team won that match with Stephanie shooting a personal best of 296, scoring 100s in both prone and kneeling.  Woodson athletes took six of the top eight positions.  Sophomores, Victoria Cross and Rose McClelland joined the record breaking team in rounding out the top positions.

Thursday, February 6th found Woodson matched up against West Potomac.  Once again Captain, Stephanie Ricigliano led the team to victory in a match that resulted in a score of 1162 to West Potomac's 1116.  Both Woodson's JV scoring teams had strong showings as well, shooting combined scores of 1134 and 1120 respectively.  Again, Woodson athletes took the majority of the top 8 positions, this time taking seven slots.  Joining Stephanie in the top 8 were Senior, Shaw-Leon Chen; Juniors, Meredith Ivey, Victoria Kopelen and Joe Hall; and Sophomores, Justin Mangis and Victoria Cross.
