2019-2020 Yearbooks Now on Sale
Early-bird Price
ONLINE ORDERS ONLY!!
School yearbooks are now on sale. Order now and save! The basic book is $15 now, but the price will increase to $18 after March 13. There are additional option add-ons such as an imprinted name on the cover, extra autograph pages and stickers. The Early-bird deadline is March 13.
PLEASE NOTE: All sales are online only. Ordering is simple: Just go to http://ybpay.lifetouch.com, put in yearbook ID code 13629420 and pay with your credit card.
Ordering early is the only way to guarantee your child will get a book. After March 13, prices will increase and we cannot guarantee that we will have any copies at the end of the year as we have sold out in the past.
Survey of Preschool Students
Virginia law, Section 22.1-254, requires that children who will reach their fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2020, must be enrolled in Kindergarten for the 2020-2021 school year unless the parent or guardian notifies the school in writing that they do not wish the child to attend school until the following year.
Please note that if you have a rising kindergartener, you may access the preschool survey here to complete and return to the school. If you have neighbors whose children would attend Hayfield Elementary, please let them know that the survey has been released so that they may provide their information to the survey as well. Registration for School Year 2020-2021
Children residing in our boundaries who will turn 5 years old on or before September 30, 2020, as well as students in grades 1-6 transferring from Private/Home Schools or moving into our boundaries prior to the start of the new school year may visit our website and select an appointment to register. Appointments began in early February and continue throughout the summer.
Please spread the word to neighbors to whom this may pertain. While you are guaranteed enrollment (as long as you physically reside in our boundaries and meet the age requirements) we prefer you register sooner rather than later to ensure we are adequately staffed. If you will not have all of the required documentation prior to June 2020, please select an appointment time now (or as soon as possible) for later in the summer so we have your information and can anticipate your enrollment.

Required Tdap Vaccination for
Rising Seventh Graders
Effective July 1, 2019, Virginia Law requires that all students entering seventh grade receive a booster dose of the Tdap vaccine prior to the beginning of school. The Tdap vaccine protects against tetanus (lockjaw), diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) and is usually given around the age of 11, although it can be given as early as seven years of age.
In order for your child to begin 7th grade you will need to submit one of the following documents before the first day of school. It is recommended that all paperwork be submitted to the school office by July 31, 2020.
Acceptable documentation can be one of the following:
- A copy of your child’s immunization record showing the Tdap vaccine.
- A note on a healthcare provider’s letterhead stating the date the Tdap vaccine was given.
- A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
- A notarized Religious Exemption Form.
The Tdap booster is available from your child’s healthcare provider or the Fairfax County Health Department. The Health Department Clinic locations and hours are available online or by calling 703-246-2411. Please note that students receiving immunizations at the Health Department must be accompanied by an adult and should bring their immunization records with them.
Attendance Reminders
It’s never too early to start encouraging regular school attendance. Nationwide data shows that starting in Kindergarten, missing 10% (about 18 days) can make it harder to learn to read and by 6th grade, absenteeism is one of the three signs that a student may drop out of high school.
FCPS expects students to be in school and follow their assigned schedules unless their absence is excused due to:
- Illness
- a death in the family
- a medical or dental appointment/ procedure
- military event
- or religious obligations.
FCPS regulation states:
“Parents should notify the school prior to, or at the start of, the school day when their child will be absent. When a student has been absent from school for any reason other than for a school sponsored activity, and the parents have not previously contacted the school, the parent must send written or electronic communication citing the reason(s) for the absence to the principal or designee no later than three days following the student’s return to school.”
A reminder that a notification to the school that your child will be absent does not automatically mean the absence is excused. If you call the school to report your child absent and the reason is unexcused, you will still receive an automated phone call stating that your child is absent that day.

Information for Rising 7th Graders:
The next parent event at Hayfield Secondary School (HSS) is the Parent Coffee. This will take place on March 19 at 8:30 a.m. in the Middle School Lecture Hall.
During the month of February, the middle school counselors will be coming to Hayfield ES to meet with each sixth grade class. At that time, each student will be entering their selections into the FCPS Student Information System (SIS). All students were sent home with a draft of the course selections they chose to share with parents during the month of January. Parents will also be able to view your student’s selections and make any changes with your child by logging into the SIS ParentVue account until March 31, 2020. There is a link, posted below, to the ParentVue and StudentVue of SIS on our Hayfield Elementary website under the title “Academics”. If you do not have a ParentVue account, you must register for one in order to check on the selections and ensure that all is to your liking. You can select the option to register for an account from the link.

In April, HSS will mail you a mock schedule of the courses that you and your child selected. This will be a list of the courses selected but will not yet have the period or room number assigned. If there are any changes that you want to make or if you find an error in the courses listed, you will contact the HSS middle school counselors to make the change. All of the necessary contact information will be included on the mock schedule. You will have until June 1, 2020 to make changes. After June 1, there is no guarantee that the change can be made.
If your child receives Special Education or ESOL services, you will be meeting with your child’s case manager prior to end of the year to determine what courses are best for your student next year. The decisions made at those meetings will be override any courses put into the system at this time. Also, if your student will be attending an FCPS school other than HSS, I will be reaching out individually. If you are moving to a school outside of FCPS, Hayfield still requests that you fill out a course selection sheet in case anything changes.

Read Across America
The week of March 2, Hayfield ES will be celebrating Read Across America and Dr. Seuss’ birthday with a school spirit week. Each day of the week there will be a different theme, surprise guest readers, and activities throughout the week. The dates and themes are listed below.
Monday, March 2 – Bring a favorite book to school and share with a classmate.
Wednesday, March 4 - Red Spirit Day to support Jump Rope for Heart
Thursday, March 5 - Buddy Class Reading Day
Friday, March 6 – Crazy Sock and Crazy Hat Day
SCA Flannel Spirit Day
Friday, February 14, is the SCA Flannel Spirit Day. Everyone is encouraged to wear flannel shirts to show your school spirit.
SCA Canned Food Drive
Remember the SCA will be sponsoring our annual canned food drive through February 28.
Students can bring in all kinds of non-perishable items. Also accepted are bags, boxes, and plastic items. No breakable items please. Items of need: sugar, oil, cereal, flour, ketchup, mayonnaise, salad dressing, jelly, coffee, peanut butter, diapers (sizes 4-6), laundry supplies, dish washing detergent, cleaning supplies, personal hygiene supplies, and toilet paper.
The SCA appreciates your donations and support with our canned food drive. The less fortunate families of our area will certainly benefit from your generosity.
Jump Rope for Heart
On Wednesday, March 4, from 3:30-4:15 p.m., students in grades four through six will have the opportunity to participate in Jump Rope for Heart. On Thursday, March 5, from 3:30-4:15 p.m., students in first through third grade will have the opportunity to participate as well.
Both sessions will take place in the gym. Look in your child’s Thursday Folder for a letter explaining this event as well as a donation envelope. There is a link on our school’s webpage where you may sign your child up. All permission slips must be turned in to Mrs. Drickey by the day of your child’s event. All money collected must also be turned in to Mrs. Drickey by the day of your child’s event. MONEY MUST BE IN CHECK FORM (NO CASH), MADE OUT TO THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION.

Career Fair – Share Your Profession
On Thursday, April 23, the SCA will be sponsoring a Career Fair from 6-8 p.m., for students in grades four through six. The Career Fair will take place during our Learning Fest. We want to invite you to participate in our Career Fair, and we are looking for parents to come and share their profession. Tell the students about what you do, why you chose your profession, your educational background, and anything else that you would like to share. You will have a table for any displays you may have in regards to your profession. The students will have the opportunity to visit each table and ask questions. Please complete the form and return the form below to reserve a table. SCA School Store
The Hayfield Elementary Student Council Association (SCA) manages and operates a school store for the benefit of the students. The primary purpose of the school store is to teach the students the fundamentals of buying, selling, and money management. In addition, the school store provides Hayfield students with easy, convenient, and affordable access to basic school supplies such as paper, pencils, and markers, etc. The school store also provides Hayfield spirit merchandise such as Hayfield window clings, Hayfield ES ornament, Y-Tie shoe and boot laces. The school store is open every morning from 8:25—8:35 a.m. and is located next door to the Health Room. A price list of our items is below.
