Dear Family Fairfax,

As we end another busy week at Fairfax, I have just received word of two of our students who entered an innovation challenge and are now finalists.  Congratulations to Katie Chung and Manish Balamurugan, who have created a prototype for a shared learning platform and have just received word that they are now in the Diamond round of the Conrad Challenge.  If they win, they have the potential to pitch their idea to a group of investors and potentially earn a large sum of money.  Last year, teacher David Friedman gave his students the task of identifying a problem and solving it…and solve it they have!  Congratulations—we are so proud!

On Monday of this past week, your four City of Fairfax principals joined our Region leadership team as well as City Superintendent to present current data around testing, student wellness, and family engagement.  Hearing the amazing work happening at Lanier, Providence, and Daniels Run and being able to represent the amazing work happening at Fairfax High School was truly a privilege.  We are so lucky to be supported by both our City and County leadership.

Congratulations to our basketball players who celebrated senior night on Tuesday!  It was incredible seeing our track and field team in Richmond last Saturday…districts are well underway, and many of our athletes are doing very, very well.   I was able to stop into a wrestling practice and see the amazing work that Coach Sewell and his coaching staff have done to “fight for the culture.”  This is their wrestling theme, and it was evident that they had built a family in addition to a wrestling program.

Don’t miss out on A Chorus Line, opening tonight! This is the final musical directed by our own Academy Musical Theater teacher Mike Replogle, and from the beautiful sounds ringing through our hallways after school, it is sure to be a showstopper!  Tomorrow, we will have our annual science fair and several of our theater students will compete in the VHSL One Acts competition at Lake Braddock Secondary School.  So much Pride at Fairfax!

Finally, thank you to the many, many community members who have filled our A Place to Eat pantry.  You are making Fairfax even better for our students in need, and we are so thankful to the many volunteers who are working to make this costly initiative a success!

Wishing you a restful weekend,

CUE/Connector Bus Passes - Update

Students who have old CUE/Connector bus passes may continue to use these cards as we still have not received replacement cards to issue.  If your card is challenged by a bus driver, nicely remind the driver that WMATA has not yet reissued cards to replace the old ones.  If you are denied service, please get the driver’s name and bus number and deliver this information to your subschool. No date has been set for issuing new cards.

This week, AP Stat did some data collection by throwing a pool noodle javelin with their dominant arm and non-dominant arm.  The intent of the activity was to learn how to analyze data that comes from dependent samples (or also known as matched pairs).  This type of data analysis is most popular with “twin studies” like Nasa Astronauts (LINK).
