Message from the Principal

Dear Wolftrap Families,

OUTSTANDING TEACHER: Last month I announced that Ms. Kat Mehari, 2nd grade teacher, was selected as the Wolfrap Elementary Outstanding Teacher of the Year. I am very excited to announce that Ms. Mehari has now been named the Madison Pyramid Elementary Outstanding Teacher of the Year. Her nomination packet will next move on to the Region level. Please join me in congratulating Ms. Mehari on this recognition!

KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION: We will hold this annual event on Monday, April 13 at 1:00 PM. Registration for the Orientation is now open and the form can be found on our website: https://wolftrapes.fcps.edu/student-services/kindergarten-orientationtimelines

SCHOOL COUNSELOR APPRECIATION WEEK (February 3-7, 2020): Please join me in thanking Mrs. May and Mrs. Johnson for the outstanding service they provide Wolftrap students and their families!

EARLY DISMISSAL: As a reminder, the end of the school day is busy with transitions and teachers assigning homework, so classes will not be interrupted with early dismissals after 2:50 p.m. Additionally, your child will be called down to the office once you are physically present in the office. This is to ensure that students are not sitting in the office and losing additional instructional time. When you arrive, please know that it may take up to ten minutes for your child to gather their belongings and join you in the office. This is especially the case if your child is outside at recess or in specials. Please build in this additional time when you are planning for an early dismissal.

HELPFUL SITE FOR PARENTS: The mission of the FCPS Family and School Partnerships is to connect, strengthen, and support Fairfax County's families, schools, and community by providing programs, resources, and services that promote student success in school and in life. The Parent Resource Center Lending Library contains over 7,000 books, DVDs, and CDs on topics related to parenting and educating all children including those with learning challenges, mental health concerns, special needs, and disabilities. Please see this site to browse the library: https://www.fcps.edu/node/31312

INSTITUTE FOR THE ARTS: Do you have a child interested in the Arts? Don’t miss out on registering for Fairfax County’s Elementary Institute for the Arts starting February 3rd! Students explore Art, Dance, Music, and Theatre through this weekly program that runs from July 6-31st.  For more information visit the E-IFTA website at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/summer-learning-programs/camps-and-institutes-elementary-institute-arts-e-ifta

Wolftrap PTA

We're so looking forward to the science experiments at Edison Expo this month! Also, don't miss two other favorite community events for February: Dining for Dollars at Silver Diner and Skate Night held at the Reston SkateQuest. Details on all below.

Believe it or not, it's not too early to think about volunteering for next year! Becoming a volunteer not only makes a measurable impact, it is one of the best ways to know what's happening from your child's perspective. Elementary school is unique in that there are so many ways to get involved-- don't hesitate! If you are a new parent or new to volunteering, start first with our list of volunteer needs. Then feel free to ask questions to volunteer@wolftrapptra.org or at a PTA meeting. February and March especially we'll talk in detail about opportunities.

Join us February 14, 8:45 am in the Teachers' Lounge for our next PTA meeting. We'll touch on the results of our Parent Survey and hear an update from Mrs. Khuluki, among other topics. If you've never been to one, we hope you'll join!

Jessica Jue, President  (president@wolftrappta.org)

Christine Harney, President-Elect (president-elect@wolftrappta.org)

Sarah Helou, Secretary (secretary@wolftrappta.org)

Katie Hunter, Treasurer (treasurer@wolftrappta.org)

Volunteer Needs

Looking for some new ways to get involved at Wolftrap! We've got lots of ways for parents to get connected:

Food Recycling/Donation

Every week, Wolftrap students collect unused, leftover food from school lunches. This food make a difference for local families in need, but not if they don't get delivered! Pickup/delivery times are on Friday between 2-5pm to Food for Others in Merrifield, and can be a one-time commitment: please sign up if you're able!

Hallway Art Display

Ms. Mallino is looking for 2-3 volunteers to come in once a month to rotate out hallway art. Done the third Friday of the month, anytime before 1 pm.  Signup here
