Lanier MS Updates - January 31, 2020

pep rally

From the Principal's Desk

Good evening,

Our week ended with Pep Rallies, to include having the GMU Wrestlers here on Friday. Save the date~GMU is inviting the Lanier community to their meet on Sunday, February 16. More details to come. The end of first semester was this past week. Due to printing errors, report cards will go home on Monday, but you can access the official second quarter grades with ParentVue.

As you look over grades, you may want to reach out to teachers regarding grades. All Lanier teachers and staff have access to e-mail, which you can reach using links on our Lanier Middle School website. You can find the e-mail addresses by clicking the staff directory link on our website. Although technology makes home/school communication easier, please remember that teachers have only limited planning period each day, which may be encumbered by grading, conferences, and professional development. Your child’s teacher will make every effort to respond to e-mails and phone calls within 48 hours, not including weekends and school holidays. We would like to promise instant responses, but the time demands during the teaching day often make that difficult. Please know that we share a common goal: success for your child. Please use http://fcps.blackboard.com to access homework and classroom assignments and to view additional class information.

Also, please remember that you can also access the days that teachers stay after school on our web page. For our students who stay after at least 2 times per week, the number of classes they are failing or struggling in reduces dramatically. Please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.

Lanier Science Olympiad

Science Olympiad is an international non-profit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers. These goals are accomplished through classroom activities, research, training workshops and the encouragement of intramural, district, regional, state and national tournaments.” Last weekend at Virginia Tech, we are happy to report that the team from Lanier participated and had some fabulous results.

Medal winners as follows:

First Place:  Density Lab - Raghav & Harisudhan

First Place: Fossils - Sai & Oliver

Second Place:  Crime Busters - Eirene & Asha

Second Place:  Anatomy - Ryeen & Siya

Fourth Place:  Disease Detectives - Sai & Himanish

Fourth Place:  Write It Do It - Fiona & Siya

Sixth Place:  Meteorology - Raghav & Ayaan

Sixth Place:  Mission Possible - Ryeen & Yanni

Sixth Place:  Reach for the Stars - Ryeen & Johann

Sixth Place:  Heredity - Fiona & Oliver

And just missing medals at Seventh Place... Code Busters, Machines, & Ornithology!

Because of their hard work and the students' accomplishments above, Lanier's Science Olympiad has been formally invited to the State Competition on March 28th at UVA in Charlottesville. Again, congrats!

Of special note, this year’s Science Olympiad has been run entirely by parent volunteers. Back in the fall, Mr. Jeff Mishak approached the school administrators and asked how he could support this important work. After several meetings and parent/student open house nights, our team was born. Without Mr. Mishak’s dedication, organization, and passion, it was very likely that our Science Olympiad team would not have formed, competed, and excelled. Thanks are not enough for him and all of his dedicated volunteers supporting our amazing students.
