MLK quote

We hope you enjoy this extended weekend in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.

We continue to write from the heart about things that matter to our #FHESfamily: service learning, healthy habits regarding technology, and raising caring kids.

Empty Bowls, Full Hearts

Second Annual "Empty Bowls, Full Hearts" Friday, February 14th!

“Empty Bowls” is an international project to fight hunger, personalized by artists and art organizations on a community level.

Please join your child for lunch on Valentine’s Day as we celebrate our community through the sharing of food, conversation, and art.  Every child will enjoy a popcorn treat using their very own handcrafted bowl.  Bowls will be sent home with students at the end of the day or can go home with a parent after lunch. We also ask that our families help fill bowls that may be empty in our community by donating canned and nonperishable goods during this event.  Donated goods can be dropped off in the cafeteria or in the main office.

We look forward to seeing you on Valentine’s Day!

Lunch Schedule:

3rd grade:  10:30-11:00 am

1st grade:  10:55-11:25 am

Here are some images from last year's event. Let's make this year's event an even bigger success by filling more bowls in our community!

Tech Talk

Common Sense Media provides families with 5 tips to get started on creating a healthy media balance in your home.

DL balance

1. Create screen-free times and zones.

Help kids take breaks from technology by limiting screen time in bedrooms, during study time, or at the dinner table.

2. Try parental controls.

Set content limits that make sense for your family. Use features such as content filtering, privacy settings, and time limits to help manage access and exposure to media.

3. Establish clear family rules.

Decide together what kind of media and technology is acceptable and when it is accessible. A family media plan can help get everyone on the same page.

4. Watch and play together.

Choose quality, age-appropriate media to enjoy with your kids. Visit commonsensemedia.org to find shows, games, and more.

5. Help kids identify healthy behaviors.

Practice talking about feelings, physical and emotional, during screen and non-screen activities.

DedicatED: SEL and Citizenship

Empathy

"Raising caring, respectful, and ethical children has always been hard work
but it's something all of us can do. And no work is more important and ultimately more rewarding."

Making Caring Common Project

As a school, we are intentional in our desire to increase Social Emotional Learning (SEL) opportunities for students at Flint Hill. We implement Responsive Classroom practices, focus on building character through literature, and have begun to target and develop self-regulation and executive function skills within our classrooms. Each year, when we add a new tool to our toolbox, we don't take one away, and teachers, clinical faculty, and administration are noticing that most of our students are able to maintain self-control, demonstrate empathy, and show compassion and respect toward one another and their teachers. We couldn't be more proud of their efforts, and we celebrate our students' accountability through positive praise throughout the day.

To further these aims, parents, we ask that these tenets of kindness remain a focus at home, as well. If we are to make a lasting impact within our school and community, we need to continue to partner with one another and be inclined to have critical conversations, when necessary, about student behavior, respect in the classroom, and good citizenship. It is our hope to continue to engender a caring community of learners at Flint Hill, and as such, you may hear from your child's teacher and/or school counselor about behaviors that impact your child or the learning of others. You may also hear from administration, if needed. Our hope is that we can work together and be proactive before interfering behaviors become a habit. We want our families to know that we are committed to creating and maintaining learning environments in which all students can feel safe, play, learn, and grow. We want all students to have a positive regard for themselves and others.

Through this message, our teachers and administration want to convey that citizenship marks will always represent what we are noticing in the classroom. This matter was discussed during our last PTA meeting, and we feel it is important for our families to know that we will communicate in "real time" if we notice behavior that is not indicative of your child's ability or best efforts.

Lastly, it is important to understand that we are deeply invested in helping you raise not just good, but great kids. When a teacher contacts you, please consider that by the time he or she has reached out to you, a pattern of behavior has developed in the classroom. Teachers will not be reaching out to families for intermittent instances of redirection.

We hope that this clarification regarding our practice will foster increased communication between home and school and continue to help our school climate be the best it can be for your children. We love our #FHESfamily, and we are truly blessed to partner with you on this most important matter--raising caring kids.
