When: Thursday, January 30, 2020 5:45 – 7:30 p.m.
Come discover the rich diversity of our school at International Night.
We are fortunate enough to have many countries and cultures reflected through our students as well as many of our families have traveled or have been stationed abroad.
This event is an opportunity to learn more about our classmates and fellow WSES families through their cultures, travels, and traditions. We will also experience our cultures through song, dance, music, displays, dress and of course food!
ALL families are encouraged to participate!
International Food Tasting 5:45 – 6:30 The evening will begin with the International Food Tasting at 5:45 in the cafeteria. Please bring bite-sided portions of food from your culture and, if you wish, a display to go along with it. To participate, please sign up here: http://bit.ly/WSESinternationalnight
International Night Showcase 6:30 – 7:30 Join us in the gymnasium for a program of performances and watch our students showcase their country and cultures through dance, song, music and more!
Parade of Nations 7:30 The evening will end with a Parade of Nations, showcasing all of the countries represented.
We look forward to a great evening celebrating our diverse community.
We raised $4,000 from the Barnes and Noble Book Fair Day in December!
Big thank you to all that came to participate and shop! We are excited to work on purchasing new books for our book room and classroom libraries we are grateful for the community support.
Family Quilt Square You should have received a square piece of paper in your child's Thursday folder. The square will become of a larger family quilt that will represent the WSES community for International Night. If you have lost your piece, or would like a new one, please email Liz Crandol (ecrandol@fcps.edu) and a new one can be sent via email. The quilt piece can depict something that makes your family, “your family”, whether it is a food dish, a flag, a traditional dress, a tradition. We look forward to displaying the full WSES family on our International Night.
Salad Bar at FCPS We are excited to announce that West Springfield Elementary School is going to the next level of providing our student and staff with a healthier lunch! Beginning on January 23, 2020, we will be implementing a new salad Bar. Attached, you will find the salad bar lunch menu, as well as the students’ hot entree choice. All students will select their fruits and vegetables for lunch from the Salad Bar, and then they may complete their lunch by choosing salad bar proteins and/or grains, or the hot entree listed on the menu for that day.
Students will “practice” salad bar etiquette and new procedures for the lunch line before the salad bar opens. We are excited that our students will have so many fresh fruits and vegetables to choose from each day and look forward to joining many other FCPS schools that have had the opportunity to implement the Salad Bar successfully!
Lockdown Drill On Tuesday, January 21, our students and staff will take part in the third of the four annual “Lockdown Drills” for this school year. A real “lockdown” procedure is initiated in the rare event a high-risk incident (involving weapons, stranger intrusion, etc.) occurs in the school, on school property or in the vicinity of the school that could endanger the safety of the students and staff.
We have had some exiting things happen in the library over the last few weeks. The day before the break we had local author Denise Lawson (writer of Black Bear Goes to Washington) come to our school and shared her books and experiences with sled dogs from Alaska. 5th and 6th graders had the chance to skype with author Cece Bell (writer of El Deafo, Chuck and Woodchuck and I Yam a Donkey).
Some highlights per grade levels includes:
Pre-K: We are learning about characters and relationships by reading Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Williams as well as reading other books by Mo Willems like Knuffle Bunny
Kindergarten: We have been working on character focus by following a character through many adventures we have been following the Gingerbread Man in Laura Murray’s Gingerbread Man Loose series.
1st Grade: We have been doing Author Focus on Drew Daywalt. We have started with his Crayons books, The Day the Crayons Quit and the Day the Crayons Came Home and will be reading more books by Daywalt and his illustrating partner Oliver Jeffers with the book Stuck.
2nd Grade: We have been continuing our Author Focus on Chris Van Allsburg continuing to read his books including Two Bad Ants and the Polar Express. Ask your student to tell you about their board game that they have been making.
3rd and 4th Grades: We have set up our chrome books and our MyOn accounts and are ready to start looking at databases. We will be working with the Britannica and PebbleGo Databases
5th and 6th grades: We are continuing our Virginia Readers’ Choice program and our Battle of the Books Program. In 6th grade we finished our Shark Tank projects for their Exploration unit from Social Studies.
