Calendar Reminder: Schools Closed on January 20 for MLK Holiday, January 27-28 for Teacher Workday and Staff Development Day

As a reminder, schools and offices will be closed on Monday, January 20, for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 21. Also, schools will be closed for students January 27-28 for a teacher workday and staff development day, respectively. January 24 is the last day of the second quarter.

Levine Music - John F. Kennedy Center

SAVE THE DATE! Saturday, February 8, 2020

Bailey’s Elementary School will be providing bus transportation to attend a Kennedy Workshop for parents and children. The event is Saturday February 8th. Information will be sent home in Thursday folders on January 23rd. Please be on the lookout for it if you are interested in attending this fun and engaging event with your child.

¡Vamos a cantar y bailar todos juntos! Join Levine Music’s First Music program as they share selections from Cantemos y Bailemos, a series of early childhood music classes in Spanish for PreK – 2nd graders. The First Music program combines the best of early childhood music education practices with fun, dynamic, and creative programs to deliver engaging musical learning experiences for children and families. You and your child will sing, chant, bounce, dance and play simple instruments in a morning of music-making in Spanish! No prior knowledge of Spanish is necessary.

Science Lab News

Second graders have been learning about weather in Science.  As an extension in the Science Lab, classes have been constructing foundations for buildings.  The foundations are intended to help the houses survive tow extreme events: high winds and flooding.


Registration Opens January 27 for World Language and Two-Way Immersion Programs; Informational Meetings for Parents Start on January 13

Fairfax County Public Schools’ online registration for the county-wide lottery for world language immersion programs opens on Monday, January 27. Current prekindergarten students may apply for the kindergarten immersion programs and current kindergarten students may apply for the first grade immersion programs for the 2020-21 school year.

The kindergarten immersion programs are available in Korean and Spanish. Korean is available at Powell Elementary School and Spanish is available at Bailey’s, Lake Anne, Laurel Ridge, London Towne, and Rose Hill Elementary Schools. First grade immersion programs are available at 12 elementary schools and are offered in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish.

Parents who are interested in the two-way or world language immersion programs in FCPS are encouraged to attend an informational meeting. All meetings are held at the school named.

A message from Justice High School Chorus Boosters

Justice High School Broadway Tonight

Justice High School's popular BROADWAY DESSERTS is happening Saturday, February 1st at 2 pm and 7:00 pm.  This year's show is entitled "Broadway Tonight" and will feature favorites from all kinds of wonderful Broadway musicals!  Special guests from Glasgow Middle School chorus will join us for both shows.  

If you've never been, this event features students singing some of their favorite Broadway songs.  During the intermission, guests are invited to enjoy an assortment of "fancy" desserts as well as coffee and tea.  The show is family-friendly.

Suggested donation for entry: $15 for adults and $10 for teachers/seniors/students - credit, cash and checks accepted at the door.  We will also be offering prizes - Nationals gear and professional show tickets.

We look forward to seeing you, and thank you for supporting Justice High School's Chorus Boosters' fundraiser.  


A message from Kaiser Permanente

Kaiser Permanente Day of Service Event in Falls Church

On January 20th, Kaiser Permanente is proud to be hosting their annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service in Falls Church, VA.  This year’s event will be held at the First Christian Church of Falls Church (6165 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church) from 10am – 2pm.

Kaiser Permanente will be providing free and fun activities for families, including:

  • Blood pressure and BMI testing
  • Glucose testing
  • Cholesterol testing
  • Wellness exams for children (in partnership with the Mason & Partners Clinic)
  • Dental check-ups (in partnership with the Medical Care for Children Partnership Foundation)
  • One-on-One behavioral health consultations, and
  • Optometry exams (at our Falls Church medical center, complimentary shuttle will be provided)

In addition, volunteers will be packing bags of non-perishable groceries to be distributed to anyone who is in need. A complimentary lunch will also be provided to all attendees via their partner, SevaTruck.


Safety Drills

We are required to have four lockdown drills a year with two drills the first twenty days of school. The students practiced a lockdown drill today and will practice another one in March.


Attendance

Call the Attendance Line at 703-575-6845 by 9:15 a.m. when your child is absent from school. The Commonwealth of Virginia mandatory school attendance laws will be strictly enforced. Parents will be held accountable for students who do not attend school regularly and on time.
