Weekly News From South County High School

From the Principal:

Family,

We are wrapping up a great week and heading into a short week.  You can’t beat that with a bat!  It has indeed been a great week here at South County as we have continued to build the culture of Family this week.  Our students have been by-in-large very focused and that always makes for a great week of instruction.

Last weekend, I stopped through on Saturday and dropped into the MAC Program.  It was such a delight to see so many students working together or with teachers and volunteers getting assistance with school work.  The MAC parents continue to provide a wonderful structure for our students to be able to come in and receive additional help in so many different areas of curriculum.  Remember they meet every other Saturday from 9:00am – 1:00pm.  It is one of the best kept secrets at South County that we no longer want to be a secret.  Invite a friend (even if they are from another school), come on out, have breakfast, and connect with a peer who is willing to help you work toward success!

It is with great pleasure that I introduce Catric Marshall to the South County High School community. Catric Marshall is our new Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist (SAPS). Starting this week, she is at South County three to four days per week. Her office is located in Room A205 across from Sub Schools 3 & 4. Catric is a Resident in Counseling in the Commonwealth of Virginia. She will meet with students who are believed to be at risk of abusing substances. Initially, Catric is available to provide on-site psycho education to identified students to determine the student’s level of involvement with substances, provide targeted education as well as additional school based supports. In the event a student’s needs exceed school based supports Mrs. Marshall is able to link the student and family with services provided by Fairfax - Falls Church Community Services Board. Catric will also collaborate with our clinical and administrative teams to support any intervention efforts of keeping our campus alcohol and drug free.

She has four years of experience working within public school systems and has held the roles of attendance officer and testing coordinator. She has worked with students in the areas of truancy, SOL, WIDA, PSAT, and SAT testing, substance abuse, and mental health treatment. Her experience ranges from working with those who have depression and trauma-related disorders to personality disorders. Prior to that, she served as an office services supervisor at the health department and as a career and education advisor for military spouses.

As she settles in, we will communicate out how to obtain the referral form to refer students for her assistance.  If you have a concern about substance abuse now, please contact the student’s school counselor or administrator until the referral process is established and communicated.  Welcome, Catric!

This week we continued preparing for the welcoming of our rising 9th graders by having our counselors go over to the middle school to share course selection information with them.  We wrapped up that work with curriculum night and our Rising 9th Grade Orientation on Thursday evening.  It was a great turnout.  Students got to meet me.  That was all that was needed! Actually, I was kibbles compared to the wealth of information the families received about the many wonderful opportunities we have here at South County.  I appreciated the efforts of our Student Services staff and our student volunteers who led our families on tours of the building.  We are excited about the next wave of Family members coming to us next year.

But we still have a way to go in this one.  And a part of that is ensuring that students are here every day to be able to move through their courses effectively and efficiently.  In order to do that they must be healthy.  Friday, we got a true taste of winter (buurrrrrr!!!).  And yet, I still observed students arriving and leaving school in less than optimal attire.  Please remind your children to wrap up prior to leaving home.   The sudden change in temperature is a breeding ground for the ills of winter, and the halls of a school house is a petri dish for germs when many students become ill.  We want your students here every day (no really, we do) and the best way to have that happen is for them to get plenty of rest and to dress for the weather.

Lastly, I wanted to share that our outstanding Leadership students put on a great week of activities for our Kindness Week and wrapped up the week with a unity effort by encouraging the entire school to sport their “Kindness Is Dope” shirt!  It was cool to see so many of the school community participate.  I kind of love this place.

Enjoy the long weekend, hug your child, and breathe.  Principal’s orders.  Thank you again for all your continued support, and we will see you next week.  #OneStallion

The South County Science Fair

The South County Science Fair is in need of judges again for this year’s fair.  The Science Fair will take place this year at 3 PM on Friday, January 24, 2020 (snow date January 31, 2020) in the cafeteria.  Judging will likely finish around 6:00 to 6:30  PM and refreshments will be provided.  Although a hard science background is ideal, it is not a requirement to be a judge.  You may also judge if your child is participating in the fair; we will just ensure that you are not judging the category in which your child is competing.

If you are able to judge this year, please contact the Science Fair Judging Chair, Mrs. Shanna Mayorov at smayorov@fcps.edu.

Attendance Office

Early Dismissals

Please send a note with your student in the morning to give to the Attendance Office first thing upon arrival. They will receive a pass for an early dismissal that time. Phones calls and should be reserved for sickness, late arrivals, and unscheduled events. Not only does this ensure your student will be dismissed on time but it also does not interrupt instructional time for other students as the pass is delivered. Thank-you for your assistance!
