From the Principal's Desk

Dear families,

It’s hard to believe that we are nearly at the end of the second quarter! I look forward to seeing you all at our PTA general membership meeting next week, at which I will provide a school update. I also look forward to our next parent coffee at 9:30 on Wednesday morning, February 5, at which I will provide some information about our Changing Education Through the Arts partnership with the Kennedy Center with a focus on one often-used strategy at CWES: tableau. I hope to see you then!

Warm regards,

Diane Leipzig, Dr. L

Do you know that according to new research, Alarming Dangers in School Zones by Safe Kids Worldwide organization, certain parts of school zones can be unsafe for students?

They noted issues with drivers dropping off or picking up students, with 1 in 3 drivers doing something unsafe, like driving while on the phone, double parking or not following the crossing guards’ rules.

As part of our ongoing commitment to overall CWES safety, we would like to offer these simple safety tips. There are things you can do in our community to help us protect our students on the move.

School Zone Driving Safety Tips

  • Be on the lookout for school zone signals and ALWAYS obey the speed limits.
  • When entering a school zone, be sure to slow down and obey all traffic laws.
  • Always stop for school buses that are loading or unloading children.
  • Watch out for school crossing guards and obey their signals.
  • Be aware of and watch out for children near schools, bus stops, sidewalks, in the streets, in school parking lots, etc.
  • Never pass other vehicles while driving in a school zone.
  • Never change lanes while driving in a school zone.
  • Never make U-Turns while driving in a school zone.
  • Never text while driving in a school zone.
  • Avoid using a cell phone, unless it is completely hands-free, while driving in a school zone.

Pedestrians’ Safety Tips

Parents, whether you are walking with your children or your children are walking themselves, here are some safety tips to keep our children safe.

  • Walk on a sidewalk or path when one is available. If no sidewalk or path is available, walk facing traffic and as far from cars as possible.
  • Never assume drivers see you; they could be distracted. It’s best to make eye contact with drivers to make sure you are seen, and to generally be aware of your surroundings – particularly when crossing the street.
  • Always cross streets at marked crosswalks; this is where drivers expect pedestrians.
  • Obey school crossing guards’ signals.
