Westgate Weekly News

Good Morning Westgate Families,

I hope this finds you having a great start to the week and to 2020!  From a snow day last week, to 70 degree temperatures this past weekend, winter weather in Virginia always seems to keep us guessing.  Since we make every effort possible to have outside recess during the colder months, please make sure you keep an eye on the weather so that your child is always prepared for outside play.

This week students will focus on the Positivity Project strength of prudence.  Prudence is the ability to do the right thing, at the right time, and for the right reason. Leveraging this strength helps a person set goals, make plans, and have the discipline to accomplish them.  Ask your child how this strength may be present in their own life at school, and at home.

We have two events to remind you of happening this week.  Tonight, January 14, we will have our monthly PTA meeting starting at 6:30 pm.  Childcare is provided, and we hope to see many of you there.  Also, our Westgate Domino's Pizza Day is this Thursday, January 16.  Twenty percent of all sales from 11 am - 10 pm will come back to Westgate when you mention the code DN3 online, over the phone, in person, or on their app.  Support Westgate this day by ordering a yummy pizza or two for family, coworkers, or friends!

As we enter into the New Year, we continue to stay focused on building positive relationships, providing meaningful and purposeful instruction, and celebrating the growth and progress of our students.  We appreciate your continued partnership in your child's education, and we know together, we will make the remainder of this year both productive and memorable.  Thank you for your support of all things Westgate and have a wonderful week ahead.

All my best,

Hallie Demetriades
Principal

Overdue Library Books

With winter break and snow delays, keeping track of library books can be confusing! The Westgate library will send overdue notices home this week to help you keep track of materials. Please help your student find and return any overdue library books. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Michelle Scherbenske mbscherbensk@fcps.edu.

GPS Bracelets/Devices

A parent or guardian who wishes for their child to wear a bracelet or device with GPS capabilities, such as an AngelSense, to school must now request principal approval for the device. Parents or guardians should utilize the new Request for Principal's Approval For Student Use Of GPS Bracelet/Device (SS/SE-349), located on the internet and intranet. If the device also includes communication features, parents must agree to disable these features during the school day and, if applicable, while on the school bus. After receiving the request, principals should complete the bottom portion of the form, file it in the student’s scholastic record, and provide a copy of the completed form to the parent or guardian. A new request needs to be completed before each school year begins.
