Weekly News From South County High School

From the Principal:

Family,

Welcome back!  It is exciting to begin the New Year!  I hope that everyone had a warm, safe, and enjoyable Holiday break.  It was just enough time to kick your feet up and relax, but not enough time to lose track of the work that we love to do. It was also enough time for me to reflect on my “why” with respect to my position here at South County and I can definitely say that I am back rejuvenated to finish the school year strong!

On the first day back I spent the day dropping into and peeking in on classes because I wanted to make sure that the staff and students were all on the same page and starting the first day back engaged and focused on instruction. I was pleased to see that classes began very well.  The students and the staff looked like they used the break to get away and come back to work.  I know that a few conversations I had with both students and staff began with, “It was so hard to get out of the bed this morning!”  But the vast majority of them ended with, “I am glad to be back and ready to put the work in.”

The weather surprise was just that, as we had an interruption mid week.  But we survived.  The rest of the week the admin team has been focusing on  curriculum planning which will determine what courses are offered in the upcoming school year.  This will help the counseling staff to better aid the students during academic advising as the students select their classes for SY 20-21.  As I began discussing at the end of last year, please continue having conversation with your children about what their interests are.  Ask them questions about why they are making some of the elective choices they are considering.  And also know that it is just as important for them to get a taste in some cases of what they may not actually end up liking as much as what they will love.  I say that to say, please let them explore and get exposed to course work in the elective ares that sometimes may not be as traditional as what we my expect them to take part in.  This has proven to make the best well-rounded students more prepared for the world beyond high school.

I am looking forward to working with all of you throughout the remainder of the year.  Know that you are most certainly a part of this Family here at South County and we NEED you to be a participating partner.  The job of the educator is ever evolving, more demanding, and expanding.  We will need you to be a part of this transformation as we continue to guide students toward a successful academic experience.  Thank you once again for this opportunity to serve in my capacity as your principal.  Have a wonderful weekend and take care of yourselves and one another.  #OneStallion

The South County Science Fair

The South County Science Fair is in need of judges again for this year’s fair.  The Science Fair will take place this year at 3 PM on Friday, January 24, 2020 (snow date January 31, 2020) in the cafeteria.  Judging will likely finish around 6:00 to 6:30  PM and refreshments will be provided.  Although a hard science background is ideal, it is not a requirement to be a judge.  You may also judge if your child is participating in the fair; we will just ensure that you are not judging the category in which your child is competing.

If you are able to judge this year, please contact the Science Fair Judging Chair, Mrs. Shanna Mayorov at smayorov@fcps.edu.

Attendance Office

Early Dismissals

Please send a note with your student in the morning to give to the Attendance Office first thing upon arrival. They will receive a pass for an early dismissal that time. Phones calls and should be reserved for sickness, late arrivals, and unscheduled events. Not only does this ensure your student will dismissed on time but it also does not interrupt instructional time for other students as the pass is delivered. Thank-you for your assistance!
