Principal’s Message

Families,

Welcome back from Winter Break! Hopefully, the weather gives us a break for a while so that we can get back to normal! It was great to see so many of you at our Parent Partnership Meeting and PTA Family Movie Night back in December! Both events were really well attended.

At the end of January, we’ll reach the end of the second quarter, which means we’ll be at the midpoint of this school year. Time is flying! Below are a few things to know so that we can continue to have a great year:

At the end of the first quarter back in November, you participated in a parent-teacher conference, which the teachers scheduled. At the end of the second quarter, there is no requirement for a conference, but you can request one with your teacher at any time. S/he’s happy to talk to you about your child’s current progress. One cool, unique thing we do at the end of the second quarter is hold teacher-student conferences, where the teachers meet one-on-one with each student to talk to them about their progress and set goals for next quarter. One of the Coates Mission traits is responsibility, and this practice is one of the ways we promote this. This is not an FCPS-required activity—it’s just something Coates stars do (and have been doing for 3 years running!). Watch your teacher’s weekly emails/texts in February to find out when s/he is holding teacher-student conferences so you can ask your child about it.

If you’re not getting a weekly class update from your teachers via email or Remind texts, let him/her know immediately! If you know what’s being taught each week, you can have better conversations at home about your child’s learning.

If you’re not connected to Coates via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, please consider following us. Reminders, pictures, and stories about our great school show up almost daily!

I hope to see as many parents as possible at our final Parent Partnership Meeting next week on Jan. 15 at 6:30. We’ll be drafting our home-school compact and continuing to strengthen our relationship.   Our kids deserve a school where parents and teachers are on the same page. Thanks for adding your voice to this process!

Proud to be a star!

      Emergency Contact Information

Do We Have Your Current Info?

When an emergency occurs at school, we call parents immediately. Sometimes, however, the cell and work phone numbers on our registration forms are no longer current.

If anything (phone numbers for you or family members, email addresses, your list of people we can call if you are not reachable, etc.) has changed since September or when you registered your child for school this year, your paperwork is out of date. Please call the front office at (703) 713-3000 or email Ms. Marney ( ajmarney@fcps.edu ) and ask how to update your emergency information

Check Lost & Found

Parents are welcome to check our lost & found (located in the cafeteria) and claim lost items at any time. Items that have been there since the first quarter of school will be donated to charity on Friday, Jan. 17 unless claimed.
