Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

We have had a great start to 2020!  Last Friday we recognized all of our FCPS Award Winners from Oak Hill! Many of our staff were nominated by parents. We thank you for taking the extra time to write such kind words of how our staff have made a difference in your child’s life! We celebrated with all of our staff with a breakfast and red carpet treatment!

We also celebrated Dr. Scott Brabrand's visit to Oak Hill in November.  Staff members shared how they incorporate Portrait of a Graduate attributes into their every day lessons and how they were able to close achievement gaps last year.  Dr. Brabrand was excited to hear about our new teacher mentoring program and targeted professional development.  Please watch this video to hear about the great things going on at Oak Hill!

Our staff and students have had a fun month of January with our school-wide Spirit Days.  Please see below for the list of spirit days this week and next.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to further support your child’s learning and experience at Oak Hill.  My door is always open!

Sincerely,

Holly DeVore, Principal

Principal Coffee

Have you heard of Growth Mindset?  Come learn what Growth Mindset is, how we use it in the classroom, and how you can use it with your kids at home.  Three Oak Hill teachers will present information at our next Principal Coffee on February 5th at 8:30 in the Oak Hill Library.  Parents will have the opportunity to visit classrooms to see Growth Mindset in action.

If you are interested in joining us, please RSVP here by Monday, February 3rd.  We will be capping this coffee at 25 participants in an effort to keep groups small as we are visiting classrooms.  If you have any specific questions regarding this coffee, please contact my Administrative Assistant, Katherine Andersen at keandersen@fcps.edu.

The Benefits of Informational Texts

Do you know that most of what we read is nonfiction?  That is why it’s important that students not only love fiction books, but also find the value and enjoyment of reading informational texts.  Informational texts can include newspapers, magazines, nonfiction articles, reference materials, how-to-texts, and instructional manuals.  By reading nonfiction, children heighten their curiosity and can connect to their real-life interests.  To learn more about the benefits of informational texts, please click here.
