Rise Against Hunger

Dear Spring Hill Families,

The time has come again for the annual Rise Against Hunger Campaign. Every year Spring Hill works with local schools in the Langley Pyramid to raise money for the Rise Against Hunger Organization.  Rise Against Hunger's mission includes:

  • Nourishing Lives- ensuring the meals distributed by its partners are used as a tool to change lives by promoting education, improving students’ health and nutrition, addressing gender inequalities, stimulating economic growth and fighting child labor.
  • Responding to Emergencies- providing food distribution in response to crises–both natural and man-made.
  • Empowering Communities- bolstering agricultural production and incomes through programs promoting improved agricultural methods, business skills, and market access

This is a wonderful Langley Pyramid tradition, and we want to make sure all families have the opportunity to participate in this campaign. There are two main ways to help out.

  1. Help raise money for the event: Donations accepted through January 24th-In the coming days, your child will bring home a collection box in which they can start to save money to be donated. While every little bit helps the cause, we hope to use this experience to teach students ways that they can earn money that they would like to donate. FCPS believes in instilling a sense of global citizenship in our learners, and this campaign brings forth the idea that each individual can help.  “Learn to Earn” is the initiative we promote to encourage students to earn money they would like to donate by taking on additional chores, setting aside part of their allowance, helping shovel snow, or any other innovative ideas they may have. This initiative also provides learners the opportunity to make a choice; whether to keep that extra money, or to donate part or all of it towards a greater good.  Each meal packaged for the organization costs only 34 cents to make. For just $5, you can donate nearly 15 meals; $15 will make nearly 50 meals, and $50 will make nearly 150 meals. In order to reach our goal of 100,000 meals, the Langley Pyramid needs to raise $34,000. You can make your tax-deductible donation today at: http://events.stophungernow.org/LangleyPyramid2020.  If your company makes matching contributions, please consider having them join you in making a tax-deductible donation.

Volunteer at the Rise Against Hunger Event, Saturday, February 8 We encourage you and your family to volunteer for our annual Langley Pyramid Rise Against Hunger event! Each school has a unique sign-up page, so if you have children in multiple schools, please ensure you sign up under each child’s correct school. Volunteers must click here to register for the event and pick a time slot in which to volunteer. Enter "Quantity" as the number of volunteers attending.  If for any reason you need to cancel, please cancel through the Sign-up Genius to make those slots available to other Spring Hill Families. Being a popular Langley pyramid event, volunteer slots will fill up quickly. Children ages 4-12 must be accompanied by an adult. This is a great event for the whole family!

On the day of the event, volunteers package meals based on the amount of money raised. Last year’s Rise Against Hunger event was a huge success and provided a wonderful service-learning opportunity for children and adults of all ages. Families in the Langley Pyramid are joining together to help children in need. In partnership with Rise Against Hunger, the elementary, middle and high schools in the Pyramid are coming together on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at Colvin Run Elementary to prepare 100,000 meals for schools and orphanages around the world.

This is a wonderful event and campaign for the whole family! We look forward to working with you to achieve our goal and help families around the world! Please email LangleySHN@gmail.com if you have any questions.
