From the Principal's Desk....

Collage

Dear Family Fairfax,

I am SO HAPPY to be writing to you again!   I jokingly told the students that, “Look, I returned and brought the snow with me!”  It was good for a laugh or two, but most of all, it was just good to be laughing with students again.  From watching all of our Government students in a mock Congress to pasta making in Family and Consumer Science to enjoying breakfast compliments of our wonderful PTSA—this was one of those weeks that serves as a reminder of how lucky we are to be at Fairfax High School.

There is a long list of what to write about, but the assembly I just attended for our seniors blew me away.  The message was all about believing in yourself and each other, that you are ultimately in the driver’s seat, and not to let negative energy or “friends” (in quotation marks because that is how the guest speaker phrased it—in quotation marks) get in your way.  He tells his own story of how he overcame adversity, and includes a lot of music and dancing.   It was great to see so many of our seniors enjoying themselves.  A special kudos to Ms. Rotella who learned about The Beautiful Tomorrow through other schools in FCPS and wanted to give our seniors something unique during our yearly course information fair.

Speaking of course registration, a parent asked why we register so early.  We are already in the midst of planning for next school year.  It takes several months to analyze course enrollment registrations, class counts, and trends, so we get started early.  Remember that your student’s course selections this year will be live in SIS, and though we want our students to register as accurately as possible to ensure course counts are as correct as possible, there will still be time to change course requests through June.

There are so many extracurricular activities happening at Fairfax in the coming weeks, and I am sure that I will fall short on celebrating  them all as they should be.  We hosted a JV Wrestling Jamboree last night alongside Curriculum Night, and we will be hosting a Science Olympiad Tournament all day tomorrow.  Tonight begins district play for our basketball teams, and we have our Senior Nights for Swim and Dive and Gymnastics next week as well!  Please remember, if you have pictures or announcements, we would love to hear from you!  Please send your celebrations and pictures to Laura Beatty at LBeatty@fcps.edu with #NewsYouChoose in the subject line.

Finally, Fairfax wouldn’t be Fairfax without the love and support of so many in our community.  The passing of one of our hometown heroes, Sergeant George Moskowitz, has left a hole in our hearts.  SGT Moskowitz was an SRO at both Lanier and Fairfax and a parent in our community.  Let his leadership and love for our community serve as a model for each and every one of us.

With Participation Respect Integrity Determination Empathy,

Erin B. Lenart, Ed.D.
