Mindfulness Group ... with Lily Spinelli and Taylor Brubaker, Social Worker Interns

Does your child struggle with anxiety? Do they tend to get overwhelmed with tasks that are attainable, but don’t know where to begin? Social work graduate students Lily Spinelli and Taylor Brubaker will be facilitating a Mindfulness Group for ninth and tenth graders during RAISE this February. The group will offer instruction on managing anxiety using healthy coping mechanisms, using practical skills to overcome life stressors, and developing a new outlook when completing overwhelming tasks. The sessions will take place over a period of six weeks and will be 45 mins in length. They will not interfere with or interrupt academic instruction. This is an opt-in opportunity and if you believe your child would benefit from this type of group, please reach out to tbrubaker@fcps.edu and lspinelli@fcps.edu with further questions, as well as to give permission, by January 24th.

Calling all families!  We are planning an afternoon of giving back and decreasing family stress. The first part of the afternoon will be a presentation for parents on how to decrease stress at home. Children and teens will work with our college and graduate students to make cards to be sent to our deployed active military personnel, sharing stories and words of encouragement. The second part of the afternoon will bring families together to set "stress less and giving back" family goals. This program is good for children ages 5 and up, and at least one parent.

How This Helps Our Community

Through this program, we will enhance family mental health and highlight ways that everyone can make a difference in the lives of others.  We will also show that thinking about others who are making sacrifices for our country will help children and teens feel better.

FCPS To Implement Student Civic Engagement Activity Option Beginning January 21

Beginning January 21, FCPS students in grades 7-12 will be allowed one partial school day absence each school year to participate in civic engagement activities. The term “partial” means that the student is expected to attend school for some portion of the day.

Under the revised regulation, students and parents must complete the appropriate prearranged absence form and include documented evidence of participation in an organized event or activity. Parents or guardians must authorize student participation and are responsible for their students’ participation. Other than those activities required by FCPS course curriculum, civic engagement activities are optional. As such, civic engagement activities are not supervised by FCPS staff.

Civic engagement could include a wide variety of activities, including meetings with elected officials, volunteering for a campaign or participating in other activities within the community.
