Viking Voice 1/8/20

January 8, 2020

Happy New Year VRES Families!

I hope you and your family enjoyed the holidays.   Although the time off was lovely, it is nice to get back into a routine and reunite as a school community.  We are super excited to get back into the groove of learning!

This year, students continue to learn about the power in positive communication through the Positivity Project.  On a weekly basis, students study character vocabulary as they continue to grow into positive and productive citizens.  Have you heard your child use words like open-mindedness, perspective, perseverance, gratitude, or teamwork?  Please engage your child in conversations at the dinner table or during the ride home from dance or soccer practice about what these words mean and how they can positively impact us.  It’s amazing to hear 2nd graders talk about why it is important to be brave or how 4th graders are using their strength in curiosity to learn more about a personal topic of interest.  Pretty cool, right?

I’m excited to share some news with you!  This year, we will plan to host Viking Family Night on March 2, 2020.  Please save the date for this important event as it will take the place of what was formerly known as VRES Math Night.  During Viking Family Night, families will have the opportunity to celebrate and explore both language arts and math!  Please stay tuned as more information about this event is forthcoming!

Finally, as we begin planning for the 2020-2021 Back-to-School festivities, I would like to hear from you.  Please use the link below to share your preference regarding the scheduling of the VRES Annual Welcome Walk and Back-to-School Night.

As always, thank you for your continuous support as we work as collaborative partners to provide the best learning opportunities for ALL of our VRES students!

2020 is going to be a GREAT year!

Sincerely,

Ms. Bumbrey

Deadline for AAP Level IV Referrals

This is a friendly reminder that the deadline for referring students in Grades 2-7 for AAP full-time Level IV consideration is due no later than January 9, 2020.  No late referrals will be accepted.  We advise parents not to wait for pending abilities test scores if they would like their student screened. While the Grade 2 screening pool casts a starting point for screening some students, test scores are only one factor in the eligibility decision.

If you would like more information about Level IV AAP services or the screening process for Level IV, there are two parent presentations available on the AAP public website  that have the same information that was shared at our local school information meetings. https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/advanced-academic-programs

Referrals can be submitted to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, Mrs. Sesso, on January 9, 2020 by 4:00 pm. All referrals and optional materials must be submitted in hard copy/paper form. No electronic submissions will be accepted. Please contact Mrs. Sesso with any questions at vmsesso@fcps.edu.

School Year 2020-2021 Immersion Program Information

Each year, rising kindergarteners and first graders have the chance to participate in Immersion programs available in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish offered at: Bailey’s, Fort Hunt, Fox Mill, Great Falls, Kent Gardens, Lake Anne, Laurel Ridge, London Towne, Orange Hunt, Powell, Ravensworth, and Rose Hill elementary schools through a county-wide lottery process. Online registration for this lottery process opens on January 27, 2020. Registration is open to all rising kindergarteners and first graders living in Fairfax County. A SIS account is required to complete the application. If a student is not currently enrolled in FCPS, registration at the base school for the upcoming school year will be required. Please be aware that FCPS does not provide transportation for students who reside outside the attendance area of the immersion schools and a one-time fee of $100 must be paid upon acceptance of an out-of-boundary placement (see Notice 5922).

In the Immersion Program, children spend half of the day in the target language learning math, science, health and target language arts. The other half of the day is spent learning in English focusing on English language arts and social studies. The instructional program follows the Fairfax County Public Schools Program of Studies at each grade level. Math, science, and health were chosen for target language instruction due to the use of manipulatives and concrete, hands-on activities, which aid the natural second language acquisition process. Students are able to connect the skills learned across both languages.

Program Sites and Informational Meetings

The schools listed on the website offer county-wide Immersion Program enrollment in 2020-2021. Parents are encouraged to attend one of the informational meetings. Please see the dates for all meetings at the website below.

Enrollment criteria and procedures are available at:

Rocks with Cops 2

Have you heard of the rock painting movement where kids and adults are hiding painted rocks across the country? The Kindness Rocks Project “encourages people to leave rocks painted with inspiring messages along the path of life.” People are playing hide-and-seek with painted rocks in hopes of spreading kindness and joy to those that discover them. “One message at just the right moment can change someone’s entire day, outlook, life!”

Join us on Saturday, January 18, at the Sully District Station to paint rocks with Cops! Join us anytime between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. We will have supplies but please feel free to bring your own as well.

Make sure to RSVP here: http://bit.ly/rockswithcops2 so we can ensure we have enough rocks!

Paint + Hide + Find + Share = Joy

Any questions, please email Community Outreach Officer Meg Hawkins at Megan.Hawkins@fairfaxcounty.gov.
