The Woodson Rifle Team started the competition season strong this past week, winning their first two matches.  Woodson’s Varsity scoring team beat rivals Robinson High School on Thursday evening in a close match.  Woodson team members took four of the top 5 places for individual high scores with many of the team shooting personal bests.  Junior, Nate Wehrlen, led the team to the win shooting a 294 (a personal best).  The Woodson JV team lost to Robinson’s JV team, after a hard fought match, by a margin of 7 points.  Saturday saw the Woodson Rifle competing against the Mavericks, a team made up of athletes from a number of FCPS High Schools.  Once again Nate Wehrlen led the team to the win shooting a new personal best of 295. Captain Stephanie Riciliagno’s weekly talks are paying off as both experienced and new team members made strong showings competing in their first matches.

The Boy's Varsity Basketball team opened up 2020 with a win at home by defeating Annandale HS in overtime 68-65, with Joe Pesansky leading the Cavs scoring 24 points and grabbing 17 rebounds.  Moe Raff also had 19 points and 6 rebounds and Devin Cuviello had 12 points, 4 boards, and 4 assists.  The Cavs transition to district play next week and will host South County at home on 1/10.

Woodson Girls Varsity Basketball (9-2) won a thriller over a quality opponent Langley at home, 38-36 on December 17.  Maggie McGuire and Abby Pesansky led the Cavs with 10 each.  Eunice Yoon added 8, Anna Wiggins 6, and Sarah Wilson 4.  On December 20, the Cavs won at Hayfield, 43-31.  Eunice Yoon hit four threes to score 12.  Abby Pesansky and Maggie McGuire added 9, Anna Wiggins 6, Sarah Wilson 4, and Allie Maahs 3.  Over the holiday break, the Cavs traveled to Salisbury, MD for the Governor’s Challenge Tournament.  On December 30, the Cavs defeated Richard Montgomery (MD), 49-30.  Eunice Yoon and Sarah Wilson both scored in double figures with 13 and 11 respectively.  Abby Pesansky added 7, Maggie McGuire 6, Anna Wiggins and Allie Maahs 5 each, and Amelia Noca 2.  In the bracket championship game the next day, the Cavs fell to Parkside (MD), 51-46.  Eunice Yoon and Maggie McGuire both scored in double figures with 15 and 11 respectively.  Abby Pesansky added 8.  Sarah Wilson and Amelia Noca rounded out the scoring with 6 each.
