Message from the Principal

Dear Wolftrap Families,

Welcome to 2020! I hope that you all enjoyed a wonderful holiday season with your families. We are excited to welcome your children back to school today!

OUTSTANDING TEACHER: I am very pleased to announce that the Wolftrap Elementary nominee for 2019-2020 Outstanding Teacher is Kat Mehari. Ms. Mehari has been a second grade teacher at Wolftrap since 2016. Ms. Mehari creates a community of learners that study and grow together. She takes the time to get to know each individual student and encourages individual strengths and talents. Ms. Mehari's classroom always feels like a family of learners. The respect and attention she gives each child shows her commitment to the individual. Ms. Mehari instills a desire to learn and achieve by holding students to high expectations, while cheering them on all the way. The full nomination packet will be submitted for consideration for the Region and County-level award. Congratulations Ms. Mehari!

EXCITING STUDENT NEWS: A group of sixth grade students competed in the State Championships for the First Lego League Robotics competition. The "Wolfbots," Arjun Hans, Jasper Deighton, Uday Sidhu, William Feuchter, Ryan Magalik, Lucas Stone, and Zach Sinclair, qualified for the state level competition after a successful regional competition. At the state competition, out of all the teams from DC and VA, they won the first place award for their Robot Design Strategy and Innovation! They've been working together since August with their coach (Arjun's Dad, Samir) to build, program, and run the robot as well as on developing Core Values (teamwork, efficiency, respect), and a Community Project addressing glass recycling in Vienna. Congratulations to these students for their hard work!

REMINDER ABOUT DROP OFF: Staff members are stationed at various locations at arrival to provide supervision and guidance on safety procedures. Please note that students are not allowed to enter the building before 8:10 AM unless they are a patrol. We do not have supervision for the main entrance before this time and at 8:10 students may walk through the front doors and wait in the cafeteria. The same applies to students wishing to enter the building through the Kiss-n-Ride door.

FIRE ALARM SYSTEM TESTING: The fire alarm system at our school will be inspected and tested during the week of January 7. The National Fire Protection Association and the Fairfax County Office of the Fire Marshal require Fairfax County Public Schools to test our fire alarm system annually. This test is very extensive, as they must inspect and test each and every fire alarm device. This testing can only be performed when the building is unoccupied; therefore, the typical hours of testing are from approximately 10:00 P.M. until 5:00 A.M., Monday through Friday. System testing can range from 1 day to 5 days, depending on building size. In an effort to minimize disruption to the citizens, the testing of the audible portion (horns) of the system is performed at the end of the total system test (the last testing day). The approximate amount of time that the audible portion (horns) are activated is 15 minutes.

Sincerely,

Teresa Khuluki
Principal

PTA Parent Survey

A total of 50 responses were received: 96% PTA members, 58% have been at Wolftrap for 4 years or more, 24% 1-3 years, and 12% new to Wolftrap. The objective of this annual survey is to hear feedback on topics like spending, communication, events, meetings and other related issues.

First up spending. Here’s where you felt PTA dollars should go.

Winter Parties were Amazing!

Wofltrap 4th Grade Teachers

Classes had service projects and lots of fun activities throughout the last week before winter break. Thanks to all who donated and coordinated these fun events! The first grade students donated socks and decorated bags and wrapped each pair before gifting them to Wolftrap's sister school. Third Grade students decorated bags and then had the opportunity to select just the right books that they would be giving in their own bag.

(Pictured here are our 4th grade teachers who really got into the fun!)
