Volunteer Information

I first want to thank all of you for getting the volunteer form turned in by the December due date. We have been in communication with the volunteer office within Fairfax County Publics Schools regarding the processing of our school volunteers.

Due to the volume of volunteer forms that we received, they will be sending out a mobile lab to process our volunteers. Please see the following information in regards to the date, time and location of the mobile lab:

Date: Friday, January 31, 2020

Time: 9:30am – 10:30am

Location: Library

One of the reasons we will be having the mobile lab out on this date is that it coincides with the PTA volunteer appreciation celebration. Since most of our volunteers will already be in the building, this will be a good day to get everyone processed so that our parents and community members do not have to take multiple days off from work to be processed. Additionally, we are having the mobile lab come out in the morning because the processing office closes at 3:30pm each day, which would make it difficult to do an afternoon processing for our volunteers.

As mentioned in previous communications, all volunteers who do not make it to the school for processing, still need to be processed in order to be a volunteer. Please see the following information:

What happens for volunteers who do not make it to the mobile unit screening process or start volunteering on a consistent basis later in the school year: Volunteers who miss the mobile unit or start volunteering at a later date will still need to come in to the school and fill out a Volunteer or Mentor Application Form. That form along with a form that the school fills out will then be sent over to HR. HR will then contact you about when they need you to come in to be processed. So, the volunteer will still need to fill out a form and be processed by HR before their volunteering can start but the clearing process will be completed on-site at the FCPS HR office.

Rise Against Hunger Event

Please carefully read the following information as it pertains to this year’s Rise Against Hunger Event. This is a pyramid wide event that is focused on ending world hunger. Each school in the Langley pyramid is being tasked with contributing to the overall pyramid goal and I know that the Forestville community will step up and do our part in the fight against world hunger.

Rise Against Hunger Event-Save the Date (All Grades)

Event Date: Saturday, February 8, 2020

Last year’s Rise Against Hunger event was a huge success and provided a service-learning opportunity for children and adults of all ages.  In partnership with Rise Against Hunger, the Langley pyramid (Langley High School, Cooper Middle School, Churchill Road Elementary, Colvin Run Elementary, Forestville Elementary, Great Falls Elementary, and Spring Hill Elementary) will come together on Saturday, February 8th at Colvin Run Elementary with a goal to prepare 100,000 meal packages for schools and orphanages around the world. Click here to learn more about Rise Against Hunger.  Last year, the Langley pyramid raised enough funding to provide 100,000 meals for families in developing countries around the world, and additional funding to support disaster relief in the United States.  Last year’s meals went to families in Burkina Faso.

We package meals based on the amount of money raised and our Langley pyramid goal is $34,000 which provides 100,000 meals.  With each meal feeding 5-6 people, this is a wonderful event that impacts 500,000 individuals around the world and broadens the perspective of our students and families.  This is a wonderful way for our students to better understand how their role in a school community impacts their global community.

“Learn to Earn” initiative begins Thursday, January 9th

On Wednesday, January 8th, your child will bring home a collection box in which they can start to save money to be donated in January as part of our “Learn to Earn” fundraising efforts.  “Learn to Earn” is the initiative we promote to encourage students to earn money they would like to donate by: taking on additional chores, setting aside part of their allowance, helping shovel snow, or any innovative way they can think.  This initiative also provides them the opportunity to make a choice to keep that extra money or to donate part of it towards a greater good.  Our students are limited by their own imagination.  They will have the opportunity to donate January 9th-24th.

Event Volunteers

Tuesday, January 7th, parents will receive an email which includes a link to Register as a Volunteer for the event.  We know how popular this event has become, and we are so proud to continue hosting it at Colvin Run Elementary School.  The event will have volunteers from all of the Langley pyramid schools and each school is given a specific number of slots per session.  The timeslots are: 8:30-10:30, 11:00-1:00, and 1:30-3:30.
