Justice Newsletter - December 15, 2019

“I'm a success today because I had a friend who believed in me and I didn't have the heart to let him down.” ~ Abraham Lincoln

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Justice Families,

On Monday, we will kickoff our academic advising season with a Den Time lesson to help prepare students to plan for their 2020-2021 course selections. Information will be presented about course offerings, sequencing, prerequisites for specific courses, and graduation requirements. On Tuesday, students will participate in a Den Time lesson on caring to close the year out with a focus on giving.

As we close out the 2019 year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff, students and parents for their continued support. Our school is truly a special community. The new year will bring new learning experiences, new challenges and lots of fun.

On behalf of the Justice Staff, we want to wish you a safe and happy holiday season. We look forward to seeing everyone on January 6, 2020.

Community Service Tracking

As many students give back and participate in community service during the holiday season, students are reminded that x2VOL is a tool to find, track, and verify community service hours. Students may access their x2VOL account through their Naviance account (accessed through Blackboard). Once in Naviance, on the left side of the screen under resources, students can click “x2VOL” . The first time students use the program, they will need to complete their profile. x2VOL will be used to verify hours for the community service graduation cord (40 hour requirement) and the Board of Education's Excellence in Civics Education Seal (50 hour requirement, in addition to other criteria). Students may contact their school counselor for more information and student instructions are posted in the document library in Naviance. Students are encouraged to complete 40 service learning hours before graduating.

Senior Transcripts/Letters of Recommendation

Students must turn in their transcript requests to the Student Services office 30 days in advance of the college deadline. Seniors need to be mindful of the impact of the upcoming winter break when counselors and teachers will not available from 12/23/19 - 01/05/20. Students with a January deadline must submit their requests by December 1st. Students who do not submit a transcript request prior to break will have their requests processed after break. As long as the student has submitted the application on time, most colleges will offer some leniency in the deadline for the documents that the school must provide. College application sites can sometimes become overloaded on submission deadline dates so students are encouraged to submit their applications as early as possible to avoid any glitches that may prevent the application from being received by the official deadline. These reminders are sent in an effort to avoid unnecessary stress. Please contact your child’s counselor if you have any questions.

Scholarship Updates

New scholarships and enrichment programs have been posted in Naviance Student. Only the student will have access to view all the details. Always check the website of the scholarship/enrichment program for the most up to date deadlines. Scholarships offered by organizations other than Fairfax County Public Schools are neither sponsored nor endorsed by the Fairfax County School Board, the Superintendent, or this school. Additional information for students, parents or guardians, and community members is available on the Scholarship and Enrichment Opportunities website.

College Entrance Testing (SAT / ACT)

The registration deadline for the February 8th ACT is January 10th. For test dates, registration and score reporting, students should visit: SAT – www.collegeboard.org or ACT – www.actstudent.org. Both the College Board (SAT, PSAT, AP) and ACT have established policies and deadlines for students with a professionally diagnosed and documented disability who apply for reasonable accommodations.
