Weekly News From South County High School

From the Principal:

Family,

This has truly been a bittersweet week at South County.  But I will say that the true colors of our students have shined through brighter than I have every seen.  The outpouring of support for one another has been amazing to watch, and even better still to be a part of.  I had the opportunity to sit in on a couple of the conversations with the students, and they were impactful and inspiring.  I say this all to say that you should be proud of who you are sending to us to work with because this week they represented the very best there is to offer from their peer group.  So, thank you.

On Tuesday at our faculty meeting, we allowed students representing teams for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to come in and share information about the outstanding effort to raise awareness about this debilitating, yet curable diseases to us.  The message they shared was so very well received by the staff and I am quite sure that it was mostly due to the passion the students displayed during their short presentation.  I was very proud of their efforts and we will be supporting them wholeheartedly as they work throughout the school year to raise money for this worthy cause.

Just as a reminder, please continue or begin to have conversations with your students about their thoughts on their next courses for the 2020 – 2021 school year.  I know that it may feel as though we have lots of time before we have to think about next year, but in terms of planning, we are gearing up for next year right now.  Course selections impact the staffing of the school, the number of sections we can offer and so many other areas.  So it is imperative that we get as much of this correct as possible so that we are prepared to offer high quality instruction to your students on day one in the classes they not only want o be in, but are also prepared to be in.  So chat it up with your child and have the honest conversations with them so they can be in the optimal position to be successful.

We are continuing to see increases in the number of students who are being requested by teachers to come see them during advisory.  This means that there are conversations that are being had between students and teachers and hopefully even better relationships being built as the teachers are becoming even more comfortable with working with students 1:1 or in small groups.  We are excited by this buy-in to this new method of reaching students and I am looking forward to seeing the impact this has on student outcomes.

We had another outstanding display of talent and dedication on Thursday evening as our South County Orchestra put on an amazing winter concert.  The orchestra students already sound incredible, but Mrs. Marci Swift added a twist by including some pieces from the South County Band and you would have thought they play together every day.  And to top things off, she even allowed Mr. Garner to conduct the final piece of the show!  I have to say, from my perspective looking on from a seat in the audience, he was a little off beat.  But that is also likely why I was sitting in the audience and not on stage.  Mrs. Swift did offer me a shot next year.  Stay tuned!

On Friday, we had the pleasure of sending off our undefeated varsity football team on to Hampton, VA for the state championship.  We had virtually every student in the school lining the halls cheering them on as they departed the building!  It was an exciting experience to say the least as they had to felt like they were on top of the world and had the entire school behind them.  In fact, they did!

Well, we are one week away from the holiday break and I am sure that you are so excited about having your darlings at home for two weeks eating you out of house and home!  I have to say that they will be missed in the halls of South County.  Okay, I am kidding.  They will be absent from the halls of South County.  That’s almost the same thing, right?  Anyway, as we approach, this last week, please remind your children to turn in those last assignments before break, and to not dump out all of their knowledge in favor of holiday treats!  We will need that knowledge in place and ready to go when we all return.

I wish each one of you a safe and relaxing weekend.  Hug your child today, and act like you like it.  It will confuse many of them!  Take care.  #OneStallion & Beat Oscar Smith!!!!

Attendance Office

Early Dismissals

Please send a note with your student in the morning to give to the Attendance Office, first thing upon arrival, so that they can receive a pass for an early dismissal. Phones calls should be reserved for sickness, late arrivals, and unscheduled events. Not only does this ensure your student will dismissed on time but it also does not interrupt instructional time for other students as the pass is delivered. Please be considerate of all students.
