Message from the Principal

Dear Sangster Community,

As the holiday season quickly approaches, I wish all of you the gift of health, happiness, and time with family and friends this holiday season.  I am thankful and honored to be working with dedicated educators, supportive parents and community members, and talented students.  Each of you help make Sangster such a wonderful place to learn and grow.  Please take time to unplug, rejuvenate and rest over the two week break.  I also wish for everyone the gift of resilience as we recover from the excitement and stress of the holidays to face the winter months.

Take good care and Happy New Year!  See you back at school on Monday, January 6, 2020.

As we begin the 2020 year, please remember that FCPS has a policy in place for how schools document student attendance in order to fulfill requirements set in place by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).  Students are expected to attend school regularly.  The FCPS attendance policy requires schools to contact parents when there are five or more unexcused absences.

Please remember to call the attendance line at 703 644-8282 or online at

to report all absences. If the school is not notified of the reason for the absence within 48 hours, it will automatically be recorded as an unexcused absence. When contacting the school, please include the child’s name, teacher, and specific reason for the absence.  Family vacations and travel are not considered excused absences.  We want children in school as much as possible on a consistent basis when they are healthy.  If there is additional medical information you need to share with us, please contact the school at 703-644-8200.

Thank you for helping to make daily attendance a priority for your child during the remainder of the school year.

Yearbook Sales

You can order Sangster yearbooks online at https://ybpay.lifetouch.com using Yearbook ID code 13246520.  The deadline is January 3rd, 2020.

A Friendly Reminder

Parents, please remember to send eating utensils (spoons, forks, napkins, etc.) if you are packing your student's lunch.  The school and cafeteria do not supply these items for students who bring lunch from home.

Rising 7th Graders Curriculum Night at Lake Braddock SS and Course Selection

Thursday, January 9: Curriculum Night

Snow Date: January 13

This is the time to hear about the courses offered at Lake Braddock and have time to speak to Teachers about their classes.

We will break the night into two sessions:

  • 6:30-7:15 PM
    • Parents report to the Cafeteria for a Curriculum Presentation
    • Students report to the Little Theatre for a Class of 2026 Pep Rally
  • 7:15-8:30 PM Curriculum Fair in the Gym

Friday, January 17: Course Selection Presentation for Students

This is the time middle school counselors will visit the Sangster and provide students with the information they will need to complete their course selection sheet. This event will take place during the school day and is for students only.

Advanced Academic Program Level IV Referral Deadline – January 9, 2020

This is a friendly reminder that the deadline for referring students in Grades 2-7 for AAP full-time Level IV consideration is due no later than January 9, 2020.  Parents are welcome to submit early, but no late referrals will be accepted.  We advise parents not to wait for pending abilities test scores if they would like their student screened. While the Grade 2 screening pool casts a starting point for screening some students, test scores are only one factor in the eligibility decision. If you would like more information about Level IV AAP services or the screening process for Level IV, there are two parent presentations available on the AAP public website  that have the same information that was shared at our local school information meetings. The Level IV Referral Form and Parent Questionnaire can be also be found on the AAP public website. Referrals can be submitted to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, Jennifer Redford, at any time up through January 9.  Referrals can be dropped off at the front office by 4 PM (Attn: Jennifer Redford) or sent via email (jaredford@fcps.edu).

Positivity Project - Week of January 6th

Happy New Year! This week’s character strength is Hope/Optimism. You show this strength when you expect the best from the future and work to achieve it. Hope and optimism represent a state of hopefulness and confidence about the future (both short and long term). People with this strength are future oriented. They have a positive vision of what the future holds and maintain confidence that they will get there. They keep a positive attitude despite setbacks – and often find ways to convert what seems like an obstacle into a stepping-stone to achieve their goals.

This Next Character Strength:     Optimism

Week of January 13th's Positivity Project Focus:     Prudence

Our Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meetings are usually held the second Thursday of every month.  Our next meeting is Thursday, January 9th at 7 p.m.  We hope that you can join us!
